A few more oldies
The Legend- Gerve Brazier, Tony Howe, Jimmy Brooker, ally mono originally built by Saltshaker in the States for Toleman, Shead Design, rigged by Jimmy Brooker with a pair of Jaguar V12 turbo motors, 1984, prior to the Round Britain Race at the start of the Putney Calais- surprise surprise ! I will try to dig out some engine pictures.

Legend Engine
Well not quite, this one came out of a Cougar US-1 38' that I was test driver for on a reseacrh project to test hull loadings. Boat eventually became Flippin- eck with a pair of Sabres in class 2. Usual Jaguar pose- leaking fluids from every orrifice- as can be seen from the paper towel, probably put a rod through the side, can't remember we got through so many. Used to have a mixture control lever on a morse cable, you had to watch an exhaust pyrometer to adjust the mixture, a bit like a small aircraft. Trying to control the pair whilst throttling and trimming the boat was a nightmare. Bonner was very clever but way to far up in the clouds with his thoughts and forgot the simple bits !

Engines
Forgot to say that on the dyno at the airport in Shoreham they developed over 1000hp each, in a race about 850 or so he said !

Self destruct
The mixture lever almost guaranteed self destruct after about 20 minutes running if you were lucky .

Mike Doxford when he had Peter Stuyvesant Sponsorship started to develop the Jag V12 Turbeau engines with Bonner Aeromarine. The 37' Cigerette had the Jags while the 38' Cougar had the Mercruisers. They also found that they couldn't get the boat on the plane because they couldn't get the engines turning fast enough to get the boost into the engine. A catch 22 situation. This was remedied by using the original Borg-Warner Gearboxes with Torque Converter Locked Up. I remember sitting in Poole Harbour just before the 1981, I think, Needles Trophy with Pete Downie sitting on the bow and Mike driving trying to get the boat on the plane.

Wonderfully simple how Buzzi got over the same problem with his Iveco & Seatek diesels, he just diverted exhaust gas down to the props to ventilate them, and allow the motors to spin-up and start the boost cycle.
The 52' Shead mono Debenhams/Shockwave, had those lock-up torque converters on it's Sabre Marathon 630 diesels.
PS. Welcome to Boatmad!
