As you can see from our track, we took the long way around, looking for calm seas. There were none except in the lee of Lyme Bay's west shore.

Thanks also to all the wonderful people who helped us and who appreciate what an effort this race is. They don't make offshore like this anymore.

Hi Lohring,

How Mike could drive with broken ribs in that lot, beats me.Some guts.

Couldn`t see the helmet cam bolted to your crash hat. That would have had some interesting footage on playback.I don`t think you will ever sample a race like that again in your lifetime.Just shows, when the OOD has the bottle to run the full course,it can be a classic, although I bet there were a few gasps at the briefing.

The weather briefing at 8am on Sunday was very matter of fact in a typical Rob Andrews sort of way - he said to expect up to force 6 maximum, but as it was quite windy at Portland it may be blowing though a bit early - no-one seemed unduly worried by the weather!

Yesterday I had a conversation with Tony Hamilton, and he told me that it was gusting up to an 8 - I would certainly say it peaked at a 7 during the trip down (we took the easy route down and the direct route back).

Does anyone know what it was actually blowing on Sunday?

Can`t say for sure, but it seemed 5 to 6 at 11.00hrs with it increasing to 7 when the rain clouds started to gather in the bay at 13.00hrs.

Force 6 are large waves with spray.Portland Bill seems to get another 5 mph of wind compared to say Swanage area when looking at the computer forecasts.

Force 7 is mounting sea with foam, but can`t say it looked quite as evil as that, but then again you were in it.I expect it seemed like very high waves with heavy sea roll (force 10) to them in a 32ft Baker sub.

hehe, You 2 Cookee, It was short, but I was hungry

Your profile pic still looks me very familiar

shame about the date, Belgian Offshore is a great event and we don't have that much back home in Belgium.

But since last year, Cowes make me feel like coming home again, so if it was for me, I'll be there next edition to

best regards
L.

It's a fantastic photo! I will admit changing course just to come over and say hi to you guys - it was a bonus you were there with your camera - it's a big place the Red Sea!

Looks like a party atmosphere at Portland Bill! I was surprised to see such a gathering. Good to know a lot of folks make the effort to watch from there - sure looks like a great spot.

It is.One of the good things about it ,is that a lot of boats make for the shelter of the east side of Portland ,then hit the Lyme Bay swell the moment they round the Bill,so they can be airborne while twisting mid flight.Problem can be on a sunny day when the sun is coming straight at you, that`s why Anvil can be good with more height so you don`t look directly at the sun so much.
I can always remember Mike Peters taking cracking shots of Delta 28,Ghost Rider etc passing the Bill in 1966,so that became a target.
What you really want is a chopper flying nice and low from which to snap with the sun behind you.£10,000 quid anyone!
