Today in Torbay Mike Newman set a new world record - 105mph on water in one of the worlds fastest offshore powerboats - what makes this record so special is Mike is blind. The boat, Silverline, a Mercury powered Outerlimits hull, belongs to international offshore powerboat racer Drew Langdon from Exeter. Drew was beside Mike for today's successful record attempt. Following the overnight storms, conditions in the Bay were far from ideal - grey skies, some drizzle, and a large swell. However, Mike and Drew decided to press on and the this morning's attempt was a complete success with the record speed being confirmed when Mike returned to the pontoon at Beacon Quay just before lunchtime.
Mike already holds a long list of speed records:
2001 - Motorbike speed record: 89mph on an Aprilia bike
2003 - Car land speed record: 144mph in a Jaguar XJR
2005 - Car land speed record: 176mph in a BMW M5
2011 - Aerial record flying the most loop-de-loops
2013 - Car land speed record: 186mph in a Porsche GT2
2013 - Water speed record: 93mph in a Silverline Racing Boat
2014 - Car land speed record: 200mph in a Nissan GTR
2015 - Truck land speed record: 120mph in a Man Racing Truck
Today's record surpasses his achievement in Drew's previous boat -also called Silverline - set at 93mph in 2013 also in Torbay.
Mike's record attempts are carried out in conjunction with the charity Speed of Sight - a charity Mike co-founded.
Silverline will hopefully be returning to the Bay in August - it is one of the competitors for the famous Cowes-Torquay-Cowes powerboat race - keep an eye out for it in the Bay over the next couple of days - Drew will be carrying out testing in readiness for that race following a complete rebuild necessary after it dramatically sank on its way to Torquay in last years race.
A big "well done" to Mike Newman - what an inspiration! the fastest blind man on the planet on land and water!
