Will it rev up in neutral? Does it die straight away when put in gear or when throttled? If it's run up out of water with flush muffs, or in the water with no prop, does it still die?

Not starter,STATER,its a little black box on the right hand side of your engine looking from the back, touch both prongs together with something conductive ie.a screwdriver it cocks everything up,i am presuming your 200 is a late 80s early 90s model.

dowd me ole mate, I think you're talking about the ecu, voltage regulator or coil, all of which are black box shaped objects.
The STATOR as pointed out sits under the flywheel as does the trigger plate.
All of these units, which have a part to play in ignition, can at least have a simple test put on them with the average multimeter or just observance.
Problem is I can't remember them off the top of my head and secondly can't find my old manual, someone here must ave them.

Less of the old, still 1st and last on/off any dance floor,with/without 20 litres of anyones best bitter and kilt swirling, going back to the stater the symptoms described are exactly what i had, bolted a new one on everything fine,on the lazer the box was about 5"x3"and3/4"thick,touch the prongs together it frys the insides,if it is stater you will have to get another one ,cant service it.

Motor dieing in gear
Does it die the second it goes into gear? If so check there isn't water in the fuel.
Is it firing an all cyls?
Check the idle timing is set at 8* ATDC, you can bump the idle timing up a little if your idling a little low. Max timing 22* BTDC.
Then try a sync and link adjustment, open all the screws on the carb linkage and make sure all the carbs are closed, then tighten the linkage up.
Set the linkage roller and throttle cam that a "match book lid" (it's in the manual ) slots between them.
Then do a stator test.

Do timing and sync and link, wont cost you anything.
Then go from there.

Mick C. Can I suggest when you post asking for help that you give a little more information, like year, a serial number can be handy, Carb or EFI, etc etc. 200 Merc covers a whole host of engines.
Dowdy. Sounds like you are refering to the idle speed control unit fitted to Laser EFI units normally mounted on the throttle lever side i.e left side from the back of the motor just behind the throttle arm. It may not apply to this motor but lets wait and see.
