Brain Teaser

Hi All,

I have 2 (new in the box) Northstar F210 Fuel Gauge-Single Engine. They do state: "Northstar’s compact dedicated fuel solution for single engine applications (gasoline only)." I bought these from the states, for the Falcon, with petrol engines. Now, as I am fitting the new diesel engines, I would like to use these, if possible. These come with one transponder, that sits in the fuel supply line, counting the usage etc. As there is only one transponder, I presume "gasoline only" is because the diesel will have a return to the tank. But, what about EFI? petrol?

If this is the only reason and nothing to do with the viscosity of diesel, I have the following idea.

I was thinking to add a small "header" tank, after the fuel filter and before the fuel pump. Bringing the supply (from tank) to the top of the tank and the feed (to fuel pump) from the bottom. Then, the return, from the engine, to somewhere low down in the header tank. The aim of this being, to give priority to the return fuel, going to the pump. Then fitting the single transponder to the pipe between the tank and the header tank. My thought is, that the fuel that is being used and the total left in the main tank, should be correct. As the header tank will re use the return fuel, that has already been filtered and counted.

This might be completely wrong but that´s why I´m asking you guys.

What do you all think.

Cheers

Pete

Rethink

Regarding the feed to the header tank. I guess this will have to be below a minimum fluid level, to prevent air intake. Getting more confused now.

I'd say that the gasoline only part is due to the viscosity, but I may be wrong.

Not sure about anything else but the header tank will need to be big enough for any air bubbles to settle out otherwise you will be introducing air into the fuel line.

Would it be a problen to put the return into the feed, with a one way valve in the return?
