Engine Choice for Ring 21... NEWBIE!
Hiya guys!
Joined the forum a couple of days ago, I'm pretty new on the powerboat scene but have been on/around boats all my life.
Couple of weeks ago I brought a Ring 21, it used to race in Guernsey under the name of Tickled Pink. Have stripped the boat down and done ALOT of sanding, and started painting it again this weekend...
My dilema! Engine choice...
Ideally I'd like to be able to overtake everyone... But with rising fuel cost etc, I'd also like economy...
The engines I'm looking at are
2006 Tohatsu 140hp with only 20 hours of use for £3500 with 1 year warranty from the dealer.
2003ish Yamaha HPDI 200hp which has been recently rebuilt £3000
1998ish Yamaha 200hp with full service history £1500
At the moment I'm swaying towards the Tohatsu, Just because its the newest engine...
If anyone could give me advice about any of these engines and how well they'd be suited to my boat, Speeds each engine would give etc... then I would be UBER greatfull!
Also, if anyone knows any history of the boat I'd love to hear about it!

Evening Andy,
You still looking at racing? If so this'll be the deciding factor on what engines you're allowed to run...
Isn't the HDPI a longshaft? If so i wouldn't imagine it'd be too great for the ring.
Tohatsu sounds like a good bet, much depends on the leg lengths on the 3, i'd imagine you'd see about 60mph with that on.

Not too too sure on the length of the shaft on the HPDI, but a couple of people have said to me its a bit easier to handle with a longer shaft.. dunno how much truth is in that?
Yeah, me and charlie are pretty damn keen to try and race next year if its comming over... Am i right in thinking the HPDI yam is the only one allowed to race?
Congrats on the young gun, shame to see you have to sell you boat.. Whats next on the cards?

ahh it's not a shame really... not revealing what's next yet, but it's good!
I think the HDPI is indeed the only race legal one, wouldn't agree with the longer leg making it handle better necessarily, it's all down to the rest of the setup... if you're running a high pitch prop right on the surface though (like my cat) i can assure you it can be a bit of a handful!
That's purely my opinion though, there's many many people on here who know an incredible deal more than me!!
Will be good to have someone else to chase around with!

Put a 140 on a 16 or 18ft Ring, but I wouldn't have thought it would perform too well on a 21. At least a 200 would be needed, but Taz's idea of the twin XR2's sounds better

hmmm... twin XR2s does sound tempting... dont think it would be a very good idea to have me in control of a 90mph boat though...
I had a feeling the hatsu might be a bit underpowered... Does anyone do any tuning to them? I was told about changing the reeds to get a few more HP but couldn't really see it making all the much difference...
Larby - Hopefully with the right engine i'll be able to have you chasing!
Another engine which I may be able to come accross is a 275hp Verado... Hypothetically, if the price was right, would this fit on my boat? Or is that a very stupid idea...

Would definately agree with All Steamed Up, you will need 200 upwards to see your Ring 21 60+mph. Good luck with whatever you choose.

I used to run a 225 Yam on my ring 21 good top speed and not too heavy....
Taz I offered £4500 for those and you said NO.... Credit crunch - God Bless Bankers.... or was that spelling wrong?

ile no on thursday if its 4 sale ive got a 2006 2.5 xs 1.87-1 sports master fat shaft 40 hrs and most of the people on this site will vouch for it its as new amazing economy and grunt

You'll be needing the twins and some very large balls for that then!!
I'd agree the verado is way too heavy, the tohatsu underpowered, so it's the yams for now then!
It's looking like my 2.5 may be for sale, it's a '99 200 powerhead that's been ported, want about 2500 but would be happy to do a deal. It's a very reliable motor and knocks socks off edd's opti...
That way it's a merc too so your choice of props is huge, i can even start you off with a couple of cleavers and a chopper in the deal!
Forgot to mention, the p/h has only done about 50 hours so is like new, and i'm not sure the cleavers would be much use for a ring being a stern lift prop... have a nice 26p chopper though

In 1990 it did 100.24mph on Windermere as a 4 litre boat, but it had a little help from Joe Donohoo.
After the remote water pickup rule was implemented, I think it was a best of about 94mph.
We ran it in the UAE at 111mph with stock 2.5-260s (and no remote water pickups) but I think hutchy ran at 117 on windermere with it. probably with remotes, and probably 280's (or more)
The 111mph was a Gaffrig reading.

Hutchy ran 117 in the Irish sea with modified 260's. He said there was no boat in the water and it was crabbing sideways, the guy who was passenger used to work for me, he said he was shitting himself.

i had a p18 with a Tohatsu 140hp 2005 and was abit tame. 16foot more fun.i found it didnt take off that well and dint hav instant power to easy pull up a skier so i would say 200 atleast on a 21. im thinkin of something wit a 200 on next year. xr2s good idea lol
