I hate old motors
The boat's been in the water for almost three weeks and hasn't been used as the weather has been awful or the tide was wrong so I couldn't get out of our cove.
Beautiful today, tide was finally right and looking forward to the first real day on the water of the year. Unfortunately, as the throttles were fully opened I heard a metallic pop and the starboard engine decided it had had enough. It re-started but we suddenly had a V5 at best rather than a V6. Went back to our berth on one engine to investigate.
Took the plugs out and all but one looked somewhat oily and dirty. One was caked in black soot. Engine still runs buts not hitting on all 6. The metallic ticking has me a bit concerned too. Any ideas?
By the way, the engines are ancient Evinrude 225s on carbs.

Oh dear!
Could be any one of so many things Ben. As you say, the metalic noise is a serious worry.
You'd better prepare yourself for what we boaters do best, part with our hard earned dosh.

I have a V4 lying around, made the same noise (once)
The cause for the poppin' sound wasn't to difficult to find.
sad thing was we weren't even pushing it.....
if somebody wants to buy it

Oh well. I'll bite.
Based on the "metallic noise bit", the 1st thing I'd do would be compression test.

My sister in law's brother is a marine engineer and will stop by one evening later on this week. I'll make sure he does a compression test.
When I looked at the engine yesterday I didn't see any physical damage to the block but who knows. Will update later in the week with pics and damage report.
Oh joy!

No pics but the engineer popped the head off the offending block and one of the pistons made the most interesting sounds as he manipulated the flywheel. Same metallic sound that I heard when it went bad.
He's looking into a remanufactured powerhead. Well what did I expect. In engine (dog) years, they are even older than me!

Thanks Parahandy. I'll keep that in mind but I will wait to see what my engineer has to say.
