Merc XR2 ?
Hi All
I've attached three pictures of an engine on a rib that I intend to buy
The engine is claimed to be a 200hp Mercury XR2 from around 2000
and that's it !
Any info that you may be able to provide would be most welcome.
The guy says that he can't find any numbers on it,he runs it on 70 to 1 mix and it revs to 4800 ,but you can see that the prop is ropy (its apparently a 21'' prop) the engine is on a 6.2 m hard nose osprey rib.
Many thanks in advance for any info/tips/advice.

XR2 performance
Hi,
the rpm you give doesn't allows to go this 70mph speedwith a 21 pitch prop, something wrong somewhere????
Cannot increase the size of your pictures.
Even if the engine is fitted with a 1.87 ratio gear case....

70 to 1 oil that barely 1.5% ! & 4800 rpm is not enough. I'd try it on the RIB before you buy it.

If he's using 70:1 oil, and it's only revving to 4800 with a 21" prop I'd say that there's a 99.9% chance it's buggered!

If it is a 200 2.0 Xr2 (hard to tell from pics) then it has a max RPM of 6800 from memory.
It should be mixed at 32:1 using merc hi--performance blend oil (according to the engine handbook).
It is a lightweight race motor and not an ideal motor for non-race rib. Should certainly pull more than 4800 rpm with a 21" prop!.

Bigger photos would be a big help in identifying the motor!

You are assuming the rpm counter is the correct one or the settings are correct.
Go and do a compression check, if there correct then run it or better still take the boat out. (Once you've added oil to the fuel if he is running it at 70:1). It could be running large jets which might be its saving grace although its still very lean at 70:1.

Yeah it none of it adds up does it ?
He was very vague about the rpm at WOT ,said the boat was doing 48 knots and he hadn't really made a note of the rpm,but the 70 to 1 mix puts me off a bit.(lot)
The pics are cut and pasted from the ebay listing (now finished) and are much bigger on ebay but shrank when I pasted them to here ?
The item number was 150925624534
I don't know much at all about these motors but it apparently has an alien cowl and an offshore leg ?
I'd appreciate it if any of you knowledgeable chaps could have a look at the ebay pic and advise what it might be.
It allegedly comes with an invoice for a new powerhead some time in the recent past.

Looks like a bit of a bitzer to me,old ridge offshore mid(pre 91) with a standard box with a later powerhead (96 on) and copy cowl.

Ok
I've built rally car engines a bit like that years ago then, gathered up all the odd bits in the workshop and slung a motor together to put in a rolling shell to flog off, would go like stink but not for long !
Probably happens a lot with old race outboards too ?
So would this merc be 2 litre, 2.4 or 2.5 ?

Thanks all for your advice
On the basis that this motor looks to be a spares package and the boat not being cheap enough to justify purchase on that basis I'll be leaving it where it is.
Best Regards All
