or replace the rings. How do you know if his compression guage is accurate???
are you sure the 2.4 bridgeports were 260hp?

OK thanks guys, I'm learning here...
Conclusion : it's a 2.4 EFI Offshore with 240hp
The owner says the open exhaust should deliver an extra 20 to 30hp (maybe a bit overrated?). So in theory it should be around 270hp. The owner also says his 18ft G-craft boat goes +130km/h or +81mph with it. That's fast, but I think it should be a bit more with 270hp. Could be caused by a not perfect setup, the 15lbs compression loss, or maybe he isn't able to control it due to the steering.... It sounds all logical to me...
Now, I'd like to know a bit more about this engine ? Can you help me with that ?
- fuel consumption ?
- full throttle rpm ?
- and most important, is it indeed a '100 hour engine' which needs rebuilts ?
- maybe an internet-link ?

81mph sounds believeable. it isn't 270hp probably actually less than 240hp due to being lacking in compression. Unless its had internal mods then it would never be anywhere near 270hp i believe the 2.4efi's are 100hour motors maybe even less depends on how you use it. JBD may know more or you could do a search on scream and fly

Max full throttle is 7000 and fuel consumption would be around 25/30 gph at full throttle

That motor will be 240hp if its standard and healthy. However if it really does only have 125lbs then it isn't that healthy and needs a rebuild. You don't skim the heads to gain back compression that has been lost by wear and tear, you replace the components that have worn and thus caused the loss of compression, most likely the piston rings. Once the motor has healthy compression again you can skim the heads for even more compression if you want it. The open exhaust wont make much difference to the power. Those motor came from the factory with or without open exhausts and both rated at the same power. So if that one was one of the ones that didn't have the open exhaust its not going to have gained 30 bhp after having one fitted.

The same WOT fuel consumption of both of my diesels! (650hp)
And...currently, twice the running cost per hour! bugger that for 240hp. (and that doesn't include the liquid gold that is: Mercury High Performance Synthetic Oil. ) Jeez!

Yup synthetic oil at 32/1 adds another £40 an hour to fuel bill

25/30 gph = 100liter / hour !!!
The fueltank in that Phantom is only 70liter
I thought 15lbs compression-loss (140->125) was not all that bad.
But according to what JBD says, it really is, and therefore needs a rebuilt...
100liter/hour !!! Man, how much is a sexy engine-sound worth ??? I can get this engine for 3500€ and probably less. Is it worth this money + a 350km drive to see it running in Germany ?
Gonna think about all this. And start keeping my eyes open for another 225 - 250hp engine...

2.4 ? nearly right
The engines you could of had around that time are:
200 HP 2.4 normal pleasure boat engine chrome bore 5800 rpm
MOD VP 2.4 performance products on carbs , earlier ones were chrome bore, later Nikasil bore, crank shaft horse power 255hp, Max RPM 7000 and ran on 100 octane aviation fuel.
2.4 EFI performance products early ones chrome bore , later ones Nikasil, 260 Hp crank shaft ,max RPM 7000, ran on normal pump gas
2.4 EFI Offshore performance products, earlier ones chrome bore , later Nikasil, mercury claimed approx 260 crank shaft HP , 7000 RPM, ran on normal pump gas
All the above performance products were Bridgeport style blocks on both chrome and Nikasil.
Your engine in the picture should be a 2.4 EFI Offshore if it has Mercurys original open exhaust drive shaft housing, that years motor was the change over from chrome to Nikasil bore , later ones being only Nikasil.
Your model in the picture should have a A13 ECU.
All Bridgeport engines were 40 hour rebuilds or less, depending on useage, due to the Bridgeport wearing the rings excessively until they failed.
