I second that. Stick a chopper on assuming you want to run the engine quite high and surface piercing. If not, just a standard merc ally one worked well for me on my old 18 with a 200.

I'm with Gary on this one:- Choppers always worked best on my R20/200 Merc:- a 14 x 26 in that case.

I had a high five 21 pitch on my R20 with 200hp Mariner best i got out of that was 55mph pulled like a train though, good for skiing if that what you want it for? Then lifted the engine 2 holes and put a Laser 2 with 25pitch on as 3 blades are ment to be faster than 5? Only prob there was i think the engine was a bit to high and i got a lot of cavitation so didnt get the best test of the Laser. Plus i think i had air lock in the oil feed and knocked the ends out the engine.

With a chopper wont you need to put a low water pick up on the motor when lifting the engine i believe?

Hi Lukejustluke,
I have a 23p Laser II for sale, it is as new and in the box. I bought it brand new and tried it only once with my R18 - XR2 the holeshot wasn't as good as I expected so I now use a 22p.
at £125 + P&P you can't go wrong.

i have tried 6 props this year on my ring 18, and by far the best were the 2 choppers i have, one is 26p and was good but now running a prop revolutions worked 24p chopper. great grip off the holeshot and really good top end. the choppers give a nice amount of bow lift which rings seem to like.

The rings seem to like the higher rake as well, so I would suggest a 14 or 14.5 depending on height x 26 with a 25 rake chopper.

Mike's designs do seem to need shed loads of bow lift to get the best top end out of them. When TD and I raced the 26, I never stopped being amazed just how how much it needed / would take. If we set the trim to it's max speed position, whilst on the trailer, when you looked at the drive, it seemed inconceivable that it could be the most efficient angle, as the drive was virtually trimmed right out of the wear cheeks on the gimble. quite extraordinary.
Was never much fun, running close to 80 in calm conditions, trimmed like that, then finding one wave bigger than the rest. Could feel a little 'loose'.
