xr2 trouble

im having trouble with my xr2 can anyone here help please?
i took it out before and was running fine, but the revs seemed a little high on idle, out on the water was fine but the revs seemed to stick a little, then it started to pop and fart, managed to get it back on the mooring, checked all hoses for air leaks, checked the throttle mech, was sound, so started it up again an revved straight up to 4000rpm, and was still popping, thats with the throttle closed?
anyone have any ideas?
cheers

Air leak? Or are ya running elec fuel pump? Mebbe fuel pressure's to high for some reason?

Have a spray around the carbs/ reed block with some carb cleaner. If youve got an air leak the revs will increase for abit then drop. Other than that sounds like fuel pressures to high for some reason or one of the float chamber valves is stuck open or has a bit of crap stuck in it? Give the carbs float bowls a good tap and see if it sorts it out. If it does i'd whip carbs off and give em a good clean.

il give that a go, but im pretty sure when i started it and the revs rose to 4000rpm, if i had let it run it would have risen higher anyway.
cheers

Please Please use a little common sense when it comes to your engine. There is a very specific synchronising process to follow when adjusting throttles and linkages. If you don't know it or don't understand it then you will do more harm than good. I read post after post where uncle tom cobbly and all give there opinion which is great, after all it's what a forum is for, but it's down to you to decide what advice you act on. To be honest most problems could be several things but the worst thing to do with these engines is a knee jerk reaction to what may or may not be good advice. First thing give as much information as possible, a picture speaks a thousand words, air box no air box, pumper or fixed jet carbs these things are important to help people understand how they can help you.

Airbox is on, as far as i know its a standard xr2 i havent touch it, its now idling at around 2000rpm but slowly rises, still sneezing but not as much, and it seems to be running really rich as its very smokey!
I can take pics and a vid of it running if thats any help?

Great, so people have suggested the floats not sealing. Remove the airbox and look down the throats of the carbs, depending which ones you have you will see the slosh tubes in the bottom of the venturi, small brass tube about 4mm od. Without the engine running turn on the fuel pump and check if any fuel flows from the slosh tube.

little update, took the carbs off and found that there was a cable tie stuck in the reed??? dunno how the hell it got there!
anyway, took it out put it back together and it ran like a dream again!
so went out for a little test run, was going well then i lost power and speed and noticed a knock!!!!!
i noticed it wasnt smoking much from the exhaust, so possible done the bearings through lack of oil, although the oil is mixed at 32/1 so that baffles me too.
so now im going to strip it down and if it aint too bad give it a rebuild over the weekend.

BEFORE YOU RIP IT APART I WOULD CHECK THE COMPRESSIONS,THAT WOULD AT LEAST CONFIRM IF THE TOP END IS OK,I WOULD THINK IF ITS KNOCKING IT WILL BE BOTTOM END.IT ALLWAYS RAN AT ABOUT 145 FT LBS WITH ALL CYLINDERS WITHIN +-2.GOOD LUCK HOPEFULLY YOU CAUGHT IT IN TIME TO PREVENT ANY SERIUOS DAMAGE.NIC
PS HOPEFULLY THE CABLE TIE WAS NOT ONE OF MINE,BUT I DID ONLY USE LUMINUS PINK ONES

So the tie wrap holding the reed open would of leaned out that cylinder. It was probably already damaged and you pushed the piston a little two much. I hope for your sake it's not too bad but....

I have the odd piston and rod for XR2 even a nice crank check the spark plugs first though to see if any have been chewed.Compression test a good idea.
You can pop a piston in without stripping it right down.

Hi mate, sorry to hear about your motor probs.
Thanks for the use of the trailer but one of my candidates tried to kill me on the emergency stop excercise and knacked my back so i never got out.
Top Gun is outside my house the 2.5 carb fired up lovely so all i need now is a tank of juice and away.
Let me know if there is anything I can do to help

Cheers

Steve
