Well I had a good time for the few hours that I was there!
Had a ride in one of the start boats (best water taxi I've ever been in!), practised my ribnobber knots towing back a Batboat, and topped up my tan.
What did the racers think of the event?

i enjoyed every minute of it,i will have pics of the muster area and the actual race coming soon thanks to matt my navigator who had a camera with him . oh and for anyone who has voted never going back,please tell us why?

I think it was pretty good, although I prefered it when all the hospitality, dry pits, etc were in the one place (Groves & Gutteridge)
I also think it's time that all this whining and protesting amongst/between classes ends, the organisers are gonna get sick and tired soon of petty bollox consuming every event.
cookee had a go at Rory about a very minor thing, and frankly, i couldn't even get my head round what the problem was! To be an organiser these days, you need the patience of a fkkn saint!
They'll get fed up with it sooner or later, then we'll have nowt!
sort yourselves out fellas.
From a visitors perspective, I had a great weekend and the weather was generally very kind to us (as my lobster spam proves)
As Mr Rocket said, we had to tow a retired Backdraft 22 back to the pits from round the back of the Island (Sandown), a safety boats worst nightmare!

Apart from my pit marshalling (lugging crap arouond) duties and being a member of the protest jury, we had a wonderful time. It's always great to see old friends that you only see once per year. Had a fantastic tussle with Clive Baker down the last few miles to the finish. He was literally 10 feet off our port side at 80+mph.
Would of course like to thank H.I.M. for allowing me the opportunity to push the throttles back and forth on the boat that got me hooked on powerboat racing in the first place!
Have tons of pics taken by the daughter's boy friend (Rupert Munro) from the start boat and from D.G-S HTM that I'll sort through and post as soon as I get a few minutes/hours.
AND WE FINALLY GOT NOISY AROUND THE ISLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think there was a big mix of positives and negatives from the weekend.
I thought the P1 concept was very good and with a bit more experience and more boats would be better still. Fabulous to see so many spectators back at Cowes as well. Lot for people to see from big boats to Thundercats.
The number of other boats racing still shows that there is a magic about racing at Cowes. NO WHERE else in this country will ever re-produce this and get so many boats racing / ex. racers meeting etc.
However there were too many mistakes made by the organisrs too! It also felt like big brother was watching / controlling you in the pits at times.
Will be interesting to see what happens in the future.

The no eating/drinking in the pits rule imposed by KBL did seem just a bit draconian.

Mixed feelings. KBL obviously tried, however, they do need to preserve some of the tradition that goes with the event, furthermore, had they let the harbour board lay the big orange buoys for the start chute as in previous years 80% of race boats would not have been dq'd and the public spectator boats would not have been at risk from a serious accident. I understand that KBL would not pay the harbour board to do this. Also, to not have any food/drink facilities in the pit area for the crews, and to try and ban the consumption of drink and food in the pits was outrageous.

So it appears that the spectators think it was a great event, and the drivers think it was crap.
( generally speaking. )
I also had some negative feedback from two of the safety boats.
Interesting.
At the end of the day - it is the man in his boat, and that includes the support and rescue boats that make the sport. Spending money on keeping the spectators happy does not make it an event for the actual racer.
I know that it is 'bad' when the drivers spend 90% of their time arguing and fighting with the organisers, and running protests, but the same drivers were at other events and they did not appear to be protesting and arguing as much then. Something to do with the organisation?

Generally agree with the above. I think the event was a great success, showed cowes can still cut it, and hopefully generated a huge amount of public and media interest. I really enjoyed the round the island race, the boat was running well and it was a good scrap all the way round.
I'd especially like to thank Rory, Debbie, Shirley, Pat & Ben. I know how hard these guys worked to make the event happen - and these are only the people I know. I think they all get the shite when things go wrong, but people rarely remember to thank them for the incalculable man hours spent leading up to and during the event, or that they're all volunteers giving up their free time to help us lot race.

Not sure what you're referring to, but if it was the timing of the meetings thing - it is important that competitors know when to turn up to briefings so that they are not disqualified before the start!
Having been towed back from the "wrong" side of the Island myself when we broke down in horrible conditions in the Europeans in 2000, I can verify it isn't much fun to be on the recieving end either, my thanks go to you and the other safety crews for making it possible to race in such an event, especially as the only official thanks appears to be a couple of very well earnt beers!
As far as my comments on the event as a whole, if the buoys had been laid in time on Friday, then the race would have been finished by the time the helicopter crashed - I believe this was an avoidable situation. With so many boats alegedly missing the chute, it must have had something to do with either the laying or positioning of the marks or the marshalling of the spectator boats in that area to have caused so many disqualifications, despite the organisors insisting that every mark remained where it was laid.
With regard to the wet pits and the safety boat mooring arrangements, I don't think I have been given so many contradictory instructions in such a short period of time in my life, and Kitten and crew had the same experience with our safety boat!
As usual the racing was a challenge due to the wakes etc in the Solent on the Saturday, and with the good weather bringing out what appeared to be record numbers of boats for the Bank Holiday made finding a safe passage through them certasinly a bit of a challenge.
The good news is that everyone, including the two crew of the crashed helicpter were unhurt, and hopefully Cowes will survive as an event for many years to come.

had a great weekend from a spectators point thought the short course on the saturday was good as everybody got to see lots of action and was probably pretty good view from cowes also
cowes to torquay used to see the boats for about 30 secs in the morning and the same on the way back
sunday was awesome to

Big thanks for the tow back. didn't get chance to see you after we got allong side. was a pretty impressive 25 kt tow. Seems we weren't the only ones who ended up with loose powerhead bolts, just hope its coincidence as we retorqued the powerhead and the transom bolts after the race on saturday
Hopefully catch up with you for a beer or two i owe you.
Infact thanks to all the safety crews and organisers. the event had its faults but doesn't everything. we enjoyed the weekend but agree the non P1 teams should have had a bar/tent to gather as my lass and 2 kids and Nav's lass couldn't get into the 'teams hospitality tent' unless they forked out £15 each so they decided to leave !! thought £20 each for the kids to go to the BBQ was a bit harsh so we like many other decided a curry with a few others was a better bet. I hear we made a good decision. Maybe next time we can make our own show work with F200.
