OCR Salcombe

It's this weekend - 19th and 20th September both days from 2.15 with a party at the Ferry on Saturday night. The Saturday race will be outside the Estuary and on Sunday we will be racing in the Estuary itself between the Ferry Inn and the entrance, you will be able to pretty much everything from Cliff House and the Yacht Club, thee will be a commentary, and it is certainly a spectacular location where you can actually look down on the race boats.

See you there!

Fantastic weekend with some very close racing especially on the Saturday, a great party on Saturday night and no complaints about the commentary either! Thank you to everyone that turned up, the Harbour Office for letting us race in the Estuary again, the safety crews and all the officials and helpers with a very big thanks to the two girls from the Eyes Wide Shut team that sold a crazy number of raffle tickets on Sunday that pretty much paid for the paramedic we had to hire for the weekend!

I will try and upload some photos later - Proper Job!

I would like to take this opportunity to say how well the two day Salcombe 2009 OCR Finals were organised and conducted.

It was miraculous that the very busy Salcombe estuary could be cleared of moored craft, ferries and swimmers during the racing. Nothing moved. On day two at the two minute start flag the course appeared as an empty lake.

Only exceptionally good liason with the HM and his assistants could have achieved this.

There were some niggles, but we were fortunate to have John Iddon as RYA commissioner and he got stuck in and promptly resolved the issues.

There are proposals for a rationalisation of classes for 2010, which the RYA committees are working on, which should make the whole sport easier to promote.

After Salcombe , the future looks brighter and more enjoyable.

May I also say that the Safety Cover in Salcombe made my SO job so easy, it almost appeared embarassing.

The safety crews were very proactive - a byproduct of good planning and organisation.

A big thank you to all safety boats, see you next year.

I came down and watched from the ferry inn on sunday, crutches and all! Weather was great and good racing, with the sun out like that it made for a brilliant venue and the water looked great (unlike Ilfracombe!!!) espically looking down on the estuary. See you next year

Thank you for your kind comments Barrie, they give us encouragement to make the event bigger and better next year!

I'm not sure if you're aware, but Kevin (Kitten) was driving along in the BananaShark yellow jet rib, and saw some people swimming in the water. One of the guys appeared to be having difficulty and was asking for help, so he approached the casualty, and after ascertaining whether he was taking the pi$$ or not rescued him, deposited him on the beach and carried on with his duties for the day! Said rescuee was later seen digging a large hole on the beach, apparently unharmed by the experience, but a little wiser!

I would like to add my congratulations to both Richard on his championship and Jeremy on his quadruple win last weekend, on that basis he must be in with a shout next season - the question is which hull will he be driving

Thank you also to all of the race crews and families for coming, the safety crews, the officials, the local companies that gave me the best raffle prizes I have ever seen, and of course the girls who sold the raffle tickets - you were all fantastic!

Next year we'll try and make sure we have a bit more water to race in!

Turn 1 lap one race one, Jeremy wide and fast with Rob in tight. Graham took the winner of the Sports Boat and Rib competition out for the day - he managed 3 laps before needing a rest, another 4 laps in race one towards the end was enough to finish him off for the day! Jeremy Gibson in Y Knot, overall winner of the Salcombe OCR Grand Prix - OCR at it's best!

I thoroughly enjoyed racing OCR with the XR2's, but it would be a bit harder to persuade the Harbour Master in Salcombe to let 15+ of them to run in the harbour I think!

Here is a link to my Facebook fotos - interesting sequence of Richard retaking the chicane on the first page!

Absolutely !! They were nearly 4 seconds a lap faster back then!! And it is now only slightly more exciting with the tighter courses.

Brilliant photos Cookee!

Love the one of the 3 boats all turning so close - looks like some excellent racing was held.

well done to all OCR crews, it continues to be an excellent class of racing with great looking boats that really fly around the circuits.

very interesting point about the RYA rationalising the classes - can anyone shed any further light on that? Looks interesting for next year..

cheers

Jacques
