You, TD and myself spent countless hours getting a formula together that suited everyone (sort of) then the RYA, in their usual limp wristed way gave in to 'Sidewinder', 'Agitator' and 'Wave Slave', giving them dispensation to race in 'T' Class, coz they didn't wanna race against the likes of 'Dog Gone', 'Mr Noisy' and 'Reefer' in GT Class, which was where they fell with the spec of their boats.
Yep, now I remember. I even recall a meeting attended by most of the crews in the new T/GT class held in Bournemouth at the RYA/Powerboat show. I'm not sure who asked for dispensation first at the meeting, it was either 'Agitator' or 'Wave Slaves' and then 'Sidewinder' followed suit.
Just so everyone knows what we are talking about and why the boats should have been ineligible for T (touring) class:
'Agitator' (formerly Brut): Phantom 28 w/twin 2.5 EFI. Should have been ineligible as race motors were not allowed in class.
'Wave Slaves': Saber Offshore 28 w/twin 2.5 EFI. Same reason as above.
Sidewinder: Magnum 27 w/twin KS& W small blocks (probably in the region of 450hp each. As Johnson mentioned, X dimension was too high. Also, excessive engine mods for class, Stellings headers (exhaust ports were supposed to exit into a common plenum within the manifold).
Then again, the exhaust manifold rule was never enforced as T class as both 'Revenger Lite Relief' and 'I Extreme It Too' both sported tubular headers. Rule infractions on other boats included such things as aftermarket nose cones on drives and the use of illegal aftermarket Holley inlet manifolds.

Of course 'Team Extreme' were always completely rule abiding racers!
One detail that caused some discomfort, after the event, for a few of our competitors, was the fact that in '96/'97, we ran with a bow tank, this tank was not 'advertised', in fact it was fairly well concealed. After we'd finished racing, and Tony Hamilton bought the boat from TD, it was noted by one of our ex-competitors that the boat had the valve/pipework and tank still fitted.
He has spent the last 6 years harping on about how we were cheating all along!
Had he actually read the rule book, he would have found that the section pertaining to bow ballast tanks, and their ilegality within the class had been removed (the NPC rules of previous years outlawed them)
So it neither said you CAN have them, or you CAN'T have them!
Quite clearly this is why we kept the bow tank in 'Extreme' a bit of a secret.
This rule was missing from PB1 because when our little working group (Ned, TD + JF) were putting the 'T' class rules together for the RYA, I made sure the subject never arrose, and quite deliberately left it out of all draft rules submitted.
So had the subject come up, in the form of say, a protest, we were safe, no rule said we couldn't have it, but as we wanted to carry on enjoying a extra piece of kit that others thought ilegal, we kept shtum.
(Agitator also had one, along with 2.5 efi's 8" 'X', and no cabin, but by then, no-one seemed to care.
So I guess If we were cheats, that's the bit we did! pulling the wool over a few half shut eyes.
