Anyone know much about trailer brakes ?
I started stripping the brakes on my Degraaff 4 wheel trailer, to prepare for winter layup and check for any needed replacements. On pulling one of the drums, the linnings fell to the floor, leaving the shoes on place. There is some rust on brake shoes but I have never known the linnings to fall off the shoes.
Anyone known of this issue before?
Pete

yeah, it happens alot, the salt water eats the bonding material, just get new linings bonded on again its much cheaper than buying new shoes all the time.

Hi Burty, Thanks for that. I would have thought that a company supplying boat trailers would use a rivited shoe lining, if salt water erosion is a problem. Do you know if a previous "bonded" shoe, can be converted to a rivited shoe?
Thanks
Pete

The metal body of the shoes may have a Brand name and part number on them. Your need to get the wirebrush out to find it. If it helps, my Trailer is equiped with Alko brake parts. Theres a Trailer shop at micheldever called Trailer Tek that stock them and other Brands. http://www.trailertek.com/ http://www.trailertek.com/acatalog/Brake_Shoes.html
also http://www.degraafftrailers.co.uk/
should still be able to supply new shoes.
P.S. As you Know, its a labour of love with Trailers, I regrease bearings and clean brakes out with Brake cleaner after every outting, My twin axle only take 2 hours to do nicely http://www.oilsandsprays.com/wurth-b...-500ml-5-p.asp the only good thing about doing this is you know each time you go out the trailer is ready for any distance. As you may know the short cut is to remove hub nut instead of the 4 wheel nuts.

Thanks Steve, Have contacted them and await a price. Problem being, it cost a fortune for shipping to Spain. Had a quote of 36.50 per axle set, plus 21.99 shipping, plus vat.
Worst thing is, they are hardly worn, just released from shoe.
Thanks
Pete

OK, the other way to do it is to take one off, take it to a spainish parts motor factor ask them for the brake shoe book, open a beer and try to find the match from a vehicle. Or if Alko parts You could try Alko to see if they have a dealer near you or send using surface mail from Germany or Italy http://www.al-ko.de/startseite-kontaktIimpressum.htm

On the main poligono there is a place that will either rivet them or bond them back on for you. Problem is I cannot remember the name. They are a general industrial supplier down one of the left hand streets off the main drag. I seem to remember it began with a P.

Maybe it was Planisi, they used to have an old guy in there about 90 that used to hand make head gaskets, never had 1 fail either.

Very interesting. Specially as the shoes are far from worn. Will look into it. Have spoken with manufacturers and got the run around. Considering a Twitter sit, to show them for what they realy are.
Thanks again
