Well, I looked at it and would swear it looked like an 18mm ply deck. sincere apologies if I'm wrong, I'll take a proper look tomorow.

As I said, It may be my mistake, and appologies if I'm wrong, but it certainly looked very 'plywood' to me.
There's dozens of possible reasons why the deck could have been replaced. getting a 'new one' as in original glassfibre, fitted, certainly wouldn't be easy if it needed it.

I have to ( unfortunately ) agree with you. But there are the occasional gooduns out there! ( but keep them a secret, else everyone will use them and you wont get your repairs done! )

The trouble is that if you dont use them enough they tend to go like the majority of marine businesses - Bust!!!

My money says 'Shogun Star' will continue to clutter up the Solent powered by various scrap outboards until you run out (of scrap outboards) and move on.

Nope I'm in for the long run! I'm now looking at a pair of small block petrols almost new! What drive is hassle free, cheap and good on performance with the chance to upgrade to higher horsepower at a later date?

Them smallblocks wonīt get that old heavy hull even to plane good enough without breaking soonafter.
454/502s are the only way to go. With 454/420s youīll just barely reach 45 knots with 502/500īs maybe a bit over 50.
Donīt expect too much of that hull ,itīs not a speed king but a heavy old wavecrusher.
Regarding drives you need Speedmaster 3īs (SSM3/SSM3A) at least on it to get it anywhere.

Apparently its just over 3 tonnes which I thought was pretty light for a boat that size! Ive been lead to beleive that speedmasters gobble up the horsepower! Apparently I'd be better off with a bravo1 or duoprop to rack up the torque!

The Bare hull is 3 tonnes, add all gear and engines and youīll end up with a dry weight of 5 tonnes, Aronow NEVER built them Light.
Sadly Bravos or duoprops canīt take the torque and the punishment it needs to get on plane.
You need twins as bravos stand up to only 450hp max and that wonīt bring a boat like that on plane, duoprops are about equal.
Trust me on this one, you need over 700hp to get it to run 45 knots and it doesnīt plane properly until close to 40knots.
When Bravos came out they werenīt sold to no more than 365hp 454īs even on the lighter boats, the 420hp had TRS drives that that boat also once had.
Those are good up to 550hp a piece at most but drag a lot.
Speedmasters donīt drag but like the TRS have a transmission which eats some hp.
