Phantom Chine Riding
Just an idea at mo,dunno whether it will work or not, maybe someone on here has already tried it,either a stainless retactable centre mounted fin just set back from the bottom of the transom,or twin fixed fins mounted on the first chine, similar to a hyussue cat i just got rid off,any thoughts/expierence of this set up anyone?

Depends totally on what model Phantom you are referring too. But chine walking is really bad set up or over trimming in my experience. I have experimented with the Phantom 18.

My only experience of severe chine walking was due to poor set up - xl shaft and motor being too deep. Stern was being lifted clear out of the water and falling onto either side. Couldnt lift motor any higher so replaced it and hey presto.
Have driven other boats with minor walk but can be corrected with steering input.

if my R21 starts walking at all a quick flick up on the lifter switch sorts it right out. That'd coincide with the bad set up theory

Too low motor or over trim will do it. but again depending on the rig.

A crap driver in a well set up boat can go quicker than a great driver in a boat that handles like crap though surely?

I'm not supporting the original post in any way, there's no need for any gimmicks like that if the boat is set up right... pretty sure what I wrote isn't bollocks though

righto, so we'll get 2 identical P20s, both with XR2s...
One with a crapload of offset, motor too low, wrong prop, weight all over the place and loose steering... The other set up bang on, right prop, motor in the right place, perfect weight distribution. Awesome driver in the 1st boat, average driver in the second. Race them in a bit of chop, who's gonna win?
Of course a big part being a good driver is knowing how to set up the boat properly in the first place!

The original question i asked was anyone on here ever tried it and if so what where your thoughts on it? Mastercraft have one on their boats running monstrous supercharged V8s and that yellow thing i gave to Dodgy Dave last year running twin 280 mercs also had a fixed fin, admittedly an american boat again, both phantoms i have owned have both twitched at max, tried engine offset,up and down with the motor, didnt really make much diff either way we rigged it,just been looking at a vid of D.Wellstead in a red 18 flat out and his arse end is twitchin all over the place and he KNEW how to rig and drive a boat, not looking to pick a nark with anyone just looking for advice on maybe an improvement on performance, keep looking at the keels on racing yachts too, like i said in original post, just an idea.

I'd like a 1500 word essay comparing and contrasting the two scenarios, with a bibliography and references at the end please.

You never see a Great White twitchin in the water, like a freakin torpedoe when prey in sight, wonder if his fin has any bearing on the equation? P.S. Paul, love essays, will do one with pics if we try this.

Fin
For what it's worth I would say a fin in the water would slow you down and make the boat feel more stable but you would be going slower so why bother !

Point duly noted and taken onboard,we will deal with the speed factor in our summary in the final chapter of the thesis.

Completely stupid question! But the obvious answer is how bad is the boat set up or driver bad is the second driver!
We have made a very badly set up p20 absolutely fantastic, both with 4.25" setback. Bad setup is un-enjoyable and dangerous.
