News Letter

Classic Offshore Powerboat Owners Club
NEWS LETTER.

7 Riding Way Wokingham Berks RG41 3AH

Welcome to the new Classic Offshore Powerboat Owners Club
The Club that intends to revive Offshore Powerboat Racing

A few of us ‘oldie’ racers who remember the glamour days of Offshore Racing from the 1961 Cowes/Torquay race to the 1990’s are a bit fed up with what is happening today, big historical races not run anymore, few entries, too many rules, no noisy boats (this suits the government) except for a few V24’s, so we decided to look for the ‘elephants graveyard’, where do old powerboats go in their past days of glory. We have been around to try and find them, and find them we have, in fields, barns, backyards, many needing refurbishing. Why have them lying around when they could be on the water? A simple answer, there are no races for them to compete in. This we intend to put right and get events like the Harmsworth, Needles, Poole Bay Trophies back on the Calendar. Lets have some good old parties, who remembers those at the Gloster Hotel, Cowes, the Bournemouth and Torquay hotels, and the good times at Swanage, Whitby and Hull, The round Britain Races, I could go on. Christmas will soon be here, if we can fix a venue we hope to hold a black tie dinner, look out for details. Our Website will be up and running in approx' the next 4/6 weeks if Mike Lloyd gets a move on. Meanwhile keep watching on Worldofpowerboats.com also on Boatmad.com for comments on their forum.

However That’s the glamour side, we don’t expect to start races with 70 boats nor at this stage run a London/Monte Carlo, Chris Strickland has proved it can be done, our intentions to begin with are to run 5 or 6 races in conjunction with existing Clubs to boost their entries and make an impact on the sport . With luck we will have 4 or 5 boats out for the Brass Monkey Race run by the RMYC who are prepared to run a ‘Classic’ class. Other events we will be organizing are Rallies, Poker runs, Concours, and displays at Festivals, ie Goodwood Revival Meeting, anything to restore the good old days of racing. We also hope to liaise with the Historic Offshore Racing Club in America. There will be trophies and eventually we hope prize money, we are an active group of business men who intend to make this THE powerboat club and are already seeking sponsors. Hopefully we might have a major announcement within the next few weeks.

Our President is Ray Bulman and Vice President Tim Powell. Commodore Tony Fiddy, Vice Commodore Alan Goodwin and Rear Commodore Mike Lloyd, myself being Secretary/Treasurer.

We are applying to the RYA for affiliation and a Club constitution is already to hand.
Basically boats have to be 15 years old, any class of boat can enter, we will tailor the racing to suit the engine sizes. We are aiming for the old Class 1 and 11 boats, but Revengers, Phantoms, Tremletts etc, etc will all be welcome. We propose an Annual Subscription fee of £100, however see our Membership Form for those joining NOW.

The Commodore (mobile 07784492449) and myself (mobile 07029574744) can be contacted at Cowes all 4 days, in or around Race Control and the Pits, and in the evening the Union Pub, Tony Hamilton’s boozer, excellent food and company. The Union will be our ‘Clubhouse’ in Cowes.

WE ASK FOR YOUR SUPPORT TO MAKE A GO OF THE CLUB

All of this sounds great!! May even get me on a plane back to blighty to watch/photograph (armchair racer!). And just talkin' out of my backside here - how about the boating equivalent of the Goodwood Festival of Speed?? The Cowes Festival of Speed, with all of the classic old racers?? Maybe held in June or July (so as to avoid all that nasty bickering that's going on over on the 'Muster' thread page on the Round The Island Race over the 'congestion' and all that? Just my tuppence worth. OK I'll shut up now.

The Classic Offshore Powerboat Owners Club

Hi!

I have a Phantom 25 1985 model with twin Merc 2.5 EFI SS engines. The boat was initially rigged with a single Evinrude V8 3.6 litre offshore engine. Would it be possible to register from abroad?

Cheeeeeers, Toffen G

What's the Latest with COPOC, it all seems to have gone a bit quiet, and how is Tony (OOD) progressing with the old Follet boat?

Funny, I asked the very same question recently and have heard nary a peep. Perhaps he's gone off the idea and decided on another "Phantom".

I wasn't for a minute questioning the progress of the club. I'm sure it will be fantastic. I was just wondering how OOD was coming along with Follett.

As OOD is out of the country at the moment I don't think I am out of line by saying that his priorities are in earning a living right now and the "Follett" project has had to go on the back burner for a while. He is determined to get it out on the water though during 2007.
