Graham I hope you don't mind - this is the shot you sent me earlier and I think the folks on here should see it! He tells me that the viewing from shore was spectacular - so whilst some say it's not real offshore racing - it could be said that the multi lap event where effectively you can see the entire event before your eyes is the way forward. Sponsors=racing=spectators=sponsors ad infinitum...........

Great shot Graham as usual!

Agreed, lovely shot. I take it this was from Egypt point? I took some pics from there last year, great vantage point as they run the boats pretty close.

Could this pic from the heli have been taken at the same time? can you spot yourself in the crowd Graham?

The safety distances they enforce out on the water really does inhibit it as photographic base.

The Cowes event and the close proximity to the shore does highlight the need to get the boats as close as possible to the spectators - it's one reason (the main reason) why I was blown away by Key West. In the US it is very evident how the spectator is recognised as a valuable part of the whole event. I remember turning up in the Keys years ago and couldn't help but notice the motels that had put up on their notice boards 'Welcome Race Fans' (where usually the room rates are advertised). It made me feel important. The local business' recognise the tourist dollars that the events brought in. So maybe the P1 folks are really getting it right. The old format CTC was real offshore racing it's true, and I loved hearing the race reports from the various points along the course, but such a demanding course also resulted in a high attrition rate, resulting in very few finishers, which after having waited an hour or two became a big anti-climax for many spectators back at Cowes. Ho hum!

A couple more heli shots courtesy of the P1 website showing the run back into Cowes.

And a shot from our appartment over-looking the marina at Cowes. a bit more civilised than our usual accomodation onboard Leviathan. Can even keep an eye on me bote from the lounge! (check out that 'limp flag'! not a breath of wind)

Wettpunkt Pic

Not in the crowd scene Jon,Pic taken 300yds further west in order to reduce
the amount of Leviathans snagging me shot up.Ain`t life a bitch when your`e
out on the water and the shore ends up the best place.Anyway now the
main event is over perhaps you could try sticking some more films on the site,
or is it that time of year when the barnicles have to be blowtorched off.
As Nigel says close action = spectators = sponsors = good event. That never
changes going right back to the 60`s.

Thumbs up Cowes 07

Had a fab week in Cowes with the Fountain...even past King of Shaves and the rest of the fleet on the home straight from the forts back to Cowes during the round the island on Fri...not bad full of fuel, weekend luggage, fenders and ropes and the kitchen sink...not to mention 3 passangers!!!! Tolls Apache sounding great...when it runs!!!! He got there in the end...and just about got home, thanks to Mike and Jackie (Extreme Boat)!!!!!
We had 10 boats in total from Poole in our Party, some newies now with the bug (in addition to the oldies) with racing planned for 2008 season!!! Got some pics will post soon.
Have now got myself a fetching jumpsuit so I can now drive the Fountain looking like Reggie...what a trend setter he is!!! Oh I'm even dying my hair tooo...ok maybe not! No need to get freddie his jump suit...he already had a wardrobe full of them!!!!!
