A Few Questions
Hi All.
Having unloaded everything I have a few questions, Hope some of you can help out.
1. I believe the drives are "TRS 400īs" would this be a good drive for the 330 hp?
2, I was told about a small oil leak, from the back of one drive, behind the U/J. Anyone know where I could get a replacement for this seal (presuming this is the fault)?
3, Is the TRS and the Alpha 1 drives the same size transom cutout?
Well, this is the start, hope some can help out.
Thanks
Pete

Yes they should take the HP but transom cutout is not same, Why are you messing around with old kit.

Hi Prince, Thanks for the answer. The TRS drives came with the engines (job lot) and the original drives, on the boat, are Alpha 1, so would never take the HP. I am leaning towards the Bravo or the Volvo drives and if I could find a buyer for what I have (drives and gear boxīs) then I would probably go for new drives.
Thanks
Pete

Update
I guess thereīs not much knowledge about something like this, on here. A couple of US forums have helped quite a lot though. Although itīs not the best rout I have decided to:
"Hi All. Well, it looks like I will be keeping the TRS drives. To be honest, to pay out another 10 to 20 K for drives, was not accounted for. Also, by putting the engines further back in the engine bay, I would have to modify the deck area around the front of the engines. The Turboīs stick up a lot higher than the sides of the boat, when in the possition of a Bravo setup. So, less $$$$$ and a lot less cutting out, is the way forward, I think?
Would the weight of the engines, further forward, effect the boat in any way?
PS, In front of the engines I have 2 fuel tanks and I have just found out that they are 50 Gallon (imp) each.
Any ideas are more than welcome. Anyone with experience of this situation, and knowing the end result, please share your experiences.
Thanks to all
Pete"
Any newcomers here, that have any ideas, please let me know.
All the best
Pete

I'd stick with the TRS's, as they are a good strong drive more than up to the job, plus, the same props that you'd use on a Bravo will work on them too.
Any Mercruiser dealer can supply the seal, although you could try your local seal specialist if you wanted to save a couple of quid!

Thanks Tony. Do you have any idea of the results, of moving the engine weight forward, albeit only the length of the boxīs?

No, but I can't see it making much of a difference, if any at all.

Alpha gibbles came out today. Can anyone tell me where I can find a template for the TRS transom cut-out? Also, Iīm fitting the water pickups soon (through hull). Is there a "distance" away from the transom, that I should observe?
Thanks
Pete

I assume your going to use a new gimble/transom gasket, so just draw round the inside of it.

Thanks Tony,
Is there a reason for moving them away from the transom? My reasons for asking are; I am fitting the sea cocks directly to the hull fittings, limiting leakage risks. I would then bracket from the transom, to keep them in line and without stressing the joints.
What do you think?
Pete

Update
I made a template for the TRS gimbles and checked the difference, with the Alpha holes, in the transom. They are about the same, wide, but the TRS are quite a bit longer.
Is there a recommended height, for the gimble, from the bottom of the hull, on the TRS drives? Or is the height of the gimble, decided by what height you want the prop shaft? If yes, what is the best height for the prop shaft?
Thanks in advance.
Pete

Itīs been recommended, form another site, that on a twin inboard / outdrive setup, the anti cavitation plate should be level with the bottom of the hull (keel), Itīs also been recommended that the prop shaft should be about 5 inches below the bottom of the hull.
Any opinions?
