2 Basic Licenses!!
Ok i realise that this year there is only 2 basic licenses available. Other than the obvious (££££) why is this so??
Doesnt give any encouragement to potential racers.... i myself would have liked to at least finish the "club classic series" at the RMYC but i aint gonna spend at least £500 on license fee/medical/measurement cert etc etc!! just to do 1 or 2 more races.
anyone have any veiws on this subject?

Seems crazy to me when we are trying to encourage new blood into the sport that we limit their options. I did 3 seasons basic racing at the start of my career, because I was also ski racing. Did not appear a problem to the RYA in those days so what has changed? There were quite a few people doing basic racing in those days and most of them have now progressed to National racing. In my humble opinion you need a few races under your belt, in varying conditions, before taking the plunge and entering the National series. It is no wonder that the F200 series never really got off the ground if the competitors can only do two races before having to commit to full licences.

i totally agree with you Ian, both our basics have been in flatish conditions, how are we supposed to know if we will be competitive when it chops up if we dont have the basic licenses available to us to make such a judgement.....crazy!

i couldnt work this one out either,i did 3 yrs of basic, and in those 3 yrs the rya would of made more money out of me,because of the race licences bought on the day,but it gave me the choice of which races to do,about 6 a year

I totally agree with you Ian.I wanted to do this season on event licences as i didnt have the money to hand to pay for an RYA licence, medical membership etc all in one go.I would quite happily have bought 6 or 7 EL's which in total would have cost more than the original licence in the first place but would have been financially more manageable for me and the RYA would have gained too!.Hopefully this will change next season, but up till then I dont know whats going to happen. Can anyone make any resonable suggestions to sort out this problem?

who makes the final decision as to how many event licenses can be issued to one person? surely if enough people wrote to said person expressing how much we feel its a load of old bollix then things may change??

Consider this though Fi, as you are only 3`6" tall surely you should get your licence half price!!!

I believe this decision was agreed by the RYA powerboat dept manager Mr Puddifoot, and the reason that you are limited to 2 EL's per season is as follows:You don't have to have a medical!
It was asked at one of the Clubs and Classes meetings if the number could be raised to 3 or 4 per season by both RMYC and OCRDA,but the answer was NO!

well having a medical is a cheaper option than splashing the cash on full license!! so why not let us do as many basics as we like if we have a medical?? makes more sense than keeping people away from the sport!

Why should that affect it? If you can do two without a medical, then why not 3 or 4?
If that is the only reason then why not have a medical, receive a certificate and take it to each event. It would still be cheaper than forking out for a full licence to do basic races and hence encourage a few more people to have a go.

The reason, I was told, is around ensuring people take a medical so they'e certified fit to race.
BUT, quite why you can't get yer medical for 20 or 30 quid, submit it to the rya, and then continue to buy event licenses for basic events, is beyond me. Although it could have something to do with training I guess - but if you need to have training to race, then why allow the 2 event licenses when a new racer is going to be most of a risk!
I did also wonder if it might have been 2 fingers to the RMYC who have a 3 basic race series, but that's probably just my suspicious mind.
I did raise this as an issue at the beginning of the season:

Licenses
Firstly may i sugest you write to you club Chairmen or Secretaries !! For onward submission to the RYA . I have this week put this fwd to Clubs, Classes & Media to be discussed again at next meeting.
I have proposed that when you get your 1st event license you are told that before you can get a second one you will require a medical which can be used for the rest of the season.
Will let you all know the outcome.
Bob

I did, on the above thread, see Adams response to me.
I would wholeheartedly support what you're suggesting. It would both ensure that people are fit ro race, whilst also continuing to make it as easy and low cost as possible, especially for the occasional racer.

IMVHO 2 race licences suck, never used to be that way for years you could run on a basic licence for as many races as you liked. It was your choice if you whished to upgrade.
So thinking ahead, brass monkey & Allhallows.............. there season over by May 2007

agree that the two basic licences has become a problem - and we should try to change this.

Well, submissions from the race clubs to the RYA will definately be a start.
Additionally, you could write directly to the important person at the RYA.
