What does it go like in your truck?

The Durmax is very nice. Pulls boats with ease, has reasoable fuel consumption and seems quick. I've just had it a few months so I don't have any long term experience.
I've seen a few duramax motors on ebay that were removed from wrecks.

Well some compatriots of yours seem to offer them - 275 - 290 HP from a lightweight motor like that is attractive to me!

I assume you took the time to read the specs on the rotaty marine applications?
You find that kind of horsepower "attractive"?
Attractive for what?
Marine 7" Supercharger setup with a 390 Holley.
Peak torque is 184ft/lb @6700rpm
Peak Horsepower is 275hp at 8500rpm

Matt,
thanks for the engine comparison above. I would be interested to know how you made the adjustments to torque in order to bring the power outputs in line with each other?
Moreover your findings are that the Nissan 350 lump produces 100lb ft torque less than the BBC which results in your conclusion that there aint no substitute for CC.
Thing is, your comparing apples with pears Matt. The 350 lump is half the cc of the BBC and yet only puts out 100lb ft less torque!!
I dont understand how you have made your calculations of these figures when you are using the specifications of a BBC marine unit which is cammed for a different power curve suitable for the marine environment in which it will operate and the 350 lump whos specifications obtained from wherever are not adjusted for the same environment.
Could you clarify your calculations please?
It is becoming apparantly clear to me that what is required is an engine that delivers max torque low down the rev range but the ability to spin high revs once the boat has cleared the bow wave.

Matt,
I've not read through all 9 pages of this post, enough of page 9 brings back memories of a Jag engine on an test-bed @ uni.......a project that i totally ****ed-up.
Are you seriousely looking for petrol alternatives? OR are you just pointing out that without going to an eqv monster Diesel, your sorta stuck back at your starting point?
I know LPG tanks are meaty ole affairs, but is there not enough unused space in the grumble....under floor perhaps that you could make a huge mess of it once and then have her all back ship-shape for next year.
I realise with that the size of the tanks rqd to run DR 90% of the time on LPG would be very large, but is there no compramise?? whereby you could store enough of the stuff to significantly reduce your fuel bills & keep the same set-up.
I would think with some "bolt-ons" you'd get easy HP increases from those puppies....would you not? making the conversion a more worthwhile prospect?
excuse my innosense!

Well I reckon, if Jon (r-don) wants to replace the american V8 with a Jap motor, just coz he wants a jap motor, then fine, but if he's really looking for a lighter, more compact motor than his own, with comaparable power an usability, and doesn't mind the cost (within reason), he could easily build a large-ish ali small block, tuned 'mildly', would, compared to his 7.4L, be smaller, lighter, and more powerful, and most likely just as, if not more, reliable.
This wouldn't be a cheap project, but, if I ever have to Petrol it would be the way I would look at going.
400ci
ali
closed cooling
400ish hp

But a greedy Fkkr.

long block refers too a motor with heads on , as in buy ing a motor ... re con. ect ; a short block is without the heads ... a small block is usually a 5.7 ltr chevy ...... a big block is 7.4 + ltr

There are generaly, for each manufacturer, a family of motors based on a dimensionaly smaller block, and a family based on a larger block.
for example, chevy have done many engines based on their basic 'small block' casting such as 305 ci, 350ci & up to 377ci, with much larger capacities possible with special aftermarket parts
And many engines based on the big block casting ie, 454ci, 502ci, 540ci, 572ci etc, again, many options larger based on special parts.
the same principle goes for Ford and Chrysler, with of course, their own choices of capacity.
