Check out the Garmin hand-held range.
I've had good service out of the yellow rubber housed item.
PS; Fits nicley between the 'windscreen' & 'dashboard'.

Garmin Gps
I have a handled garmin 76C MAP for more than 3years, it floats, easy to understand, and have max speed registred memory too. Very happy with it. Not cheap too, but nice piece of technology.
The 76CMAP is supersed by 76CX & 76CSX
The GARMIN 76 serie are very good products.
