Thats the boat - looking forward to the sound of those Lambos!

I don't think I want to know why it was called 'Rear Entry'!

Smile New Girli

Hey Everyone!!! Im Tasha, Colin Gibson's daughter (patriot) and I am all new to this site so don't really know what I'm upto.

First though I'd like to say thanks for a great day at the poker run. It was my first one and I had a really good time. I was in T2 with Dad and John.

On the subject of round the island though, thats a shame that their stopping it! Do you think it's just this year or thats it completely now? Was really looking forward to my first race being round the Island but hey, at least there is still a basic race going on!

Someone mentioned running it in September which is apparently when it was originally run anyway!

Might make it possible if the Solent is less busy?

Welcome Tasha!

DONT MENTION THE SAIL BOATS!!!

I recon that Cowes could be up for a powerboat club to take over and run a race event for the 'little people'. The club would need to go ask the various organisations that are 'anti' the round the island race, and determine from them what they think the optimum date would be for the round the island race, and then set it up for that date.

Seperating Cowes from the P1 event would give more space for the compeditors, selecting a date that is acceptable to officails would cut down on resistance to the race, and enhance the event....

Does my memory serve me correctly in thinking you had trouble at cowes due to sail boats? dq'd due to swerving to avoid them on the finish run?

I'm sure there have been other incidents and something really needs to be done.....I'm aware of the "Power gives way to sail" rule but how far can this go? Even when racing on a marked course?

Don't they close the water to pleasureboats in other parts of the world to make way for racing?

I understand it is very hard to stop people using the water and that Cowes is a sailing orientated harbour but when people are having to take dangerous evasive action and people's lives are at risk (both the crew of the race boat and that of the sail boat) it has to be brought to someone's attention.

If Marc Lamont (I hope I'm right there?) had been a less skilled driver and cut the yacht in half due to them crossing his racing line I'm sure they would've been the first to complain!!

I'm also sure they'd have something to moan about if we went out during Cowes Week and cut through the fleet of racing yachts in our own style of "pleasure boating"!?

The close miss last year was not me. I did have a moment in 2004 with V4. We were racing for third place at the time, closely following two other V24's in a nice line. A rather large sailboat changed tack right in front of us, and I went behind, V4 went in front, and after that we were then racing for sixth place! The sail boat crew applauded as we went past, like it was something they enjoyed. Its not like the V24's are quiet, and that they had no notice, having just seen two boats go past them....

About 5 years ago I was very very new to powerboats and water and such. I bought a Sunseeker Apache from Salterns Marina, and 'drove' it home to London. Being brand new to the 'SEA' I stuck close to shore, and that ment going north of the Isle of Whight, as South was too scary! It was also the Cowes Week...

At a really mild 20 knots, I attempted to work my way through the rag and stick brigade. I was abused by almost every boat, and it seemed there was no way to get past the damn boats zigging and zagging all over the place. This first meeting with our 'brothers of the wind' was re-inforced a year later, when anchored off the coast in Thorness Bay, eating lunch with a group of friends I was hit by a sail boat who screamed and shouted that power gives way to sail - whilst I was at anchor with the engines off!

I love them.

As a post script:

It seems that some of the sail boaters feel the need to remove powerboats from 'their' waters. The law applies both sides, and there needs to be respect from both sides. When Sail boats do something deliberate and dangerous, they need to be brought to book, just as the same thing should happen to powerboats who do stupid and dangerous manouvers.

Another problem last year was that many people didnt realise where the start/finish shute was. Sitting out in thr middle on one of the start boats we could see loads of boats missing the chute (possibly due to too few marker buoys but im not sure on that) this put them right in the path of lots of sail boats which were far too close. On the matter of the water control Max, i think the safety boats can only reccoment that the sail boats dont go into the channel and cant actually stop them, even though younormally see a motor boat chasing after any that go to close to help them decide to get out.

Later in the day while out on DGS's Cat one of the P1 boats missed the marker, came the wrong side of it and within 10m of the boat we were on. Again later on we were also nearly crushed by Sony (now KeraKol i think)!

Another thing with the sail boat problem. \during Cowes Regatta week for the sailors, most motor boats seem to accept that thius is there time and keep out the way, why can they not show the same consideration and leave off over the powerboat weekend.
