Here's a Gem....
...The TV coverage of the 1985 Torbay event.
An old customer of mine, Dick Strutton, as many will know, was/is a roughty-toughty character, and when he had Dicky Davies from World of Sport stick a camera/microphone in his face after the race and ask how it went, poor old Dick, desparate not swear, or say something he shouldn't on TV, couldn't think what to say, and blurted out that it was 'Really Scarey'.
He got such a ribbing for it (it really wasn't his usual style) and probably gets reminded of it to this day. He certainly will now, probably from his son Richard when he sees this.
Anyways, here it is, as ever, with thanks to Graham Stevens for sharing his amazing collection and to Matt for hosting it all.

1985 CTC + Documentory to come later today.

Trouble with TV in those days they never showed it. We sat in the Habour Lights getting Pissed and normally missed the finish. remember the start though.

Guys,taste you the 1966 CTC!
Real Offshore!
We can note the different performances of those legendaries boats.
For example the different perfomances of the hulls, like the little and powerful Delta 28 that escape from the Surfury in the first miles of the race on near- to flat waters.
Fantastic boat the Surfury! Fast on calm waters with a supreme trim. Quite good on rough waters.
When the sea becomes more and more' rough the Gardners keep Shead.
They have the race!
Then the achilles heel of the Levi's boats;the drives units.Engine problems to Lewis with the powerful Thunderbolt, that was the only one to compete with the two Levi's hulls.
Jim Wynne winner pratically alone in the cockpit(him co-driver Sherbert knocked out) with him little but powerful turbine engined Ghost Rider.
Powerful but wrong hull for Flying Fish(too much displacing hull). It's seem be on the first places thank to the engines.
News Of The World very original but very poor marine hull.
Good night guys,I will sleep with this video on my mind....

Worth their weight in gold! It's fantastic to see all this wonderful footage. Just clocked the 72 CTC - Eraf, Lady Nara - it's all too much!! Thanks Graham for sharing your collection - just think - it beats it all just sitting on the shelf at the Museum! And thanks to you too Jon/Matt for accommodating it all. Just wonderful.

Powerboat 66
At the risk of blowing up Matt`s server, here is another post.
Glad to see you enjoyed the video Marco (Black Tornado). It`s one of my favourites, but I feel I must comment re `Flying Fish` being the wrong hull.
Du cane the boat`s designer and doyen of high speed craft would have taken a dim view of such a comment.
A little bit of history to elaborate. The boat was competitive for it`s day, albeit with 300hp extra/engine compared to Ghost Rider and Surfury which had same Daytona`s (Shead was Daytona agent, before he started his design company). In the race (it`s first one) they were taking it easy and would have won if it had not sunk, and no it did not hit anything (the usual cry), the `P` bracket fell off due to incorrect tolerances on the bolting. They flew over Lyme Bay the day after and it was still floating under the surface, but insurance politics dictated to leave it be.
The drawings for the alloy hull were done by Shead`s first employee, and from there the Enfield/Allday and then CUV hulls were designed. So boats like `Thuraya` in P1 can owe their pedigree right back to the days of 66.
The 60`s era was the best for evolving raceboat design, just before your beloved plastic cigarettes and bolt on drives.Sorry Marco.

I suspected that post might well provoke a response from you Graham! ....A 'Ticking bomb' I thought to myself!
They are indeed great vids, I particularly like the '85 one with the wee documentary. (And of course Dick Struttons embarrasing 'Scarey' comment)
Excellent stuff. Thanks again.
PS If you're going to start 'post whoring', you'll have to bite the bullet and get BroadBand! Then you'll be able to see the vids in the gallery other than your own donations.

FLYING FISH(are you Graham?),sorry if I negatively criticize that Peter Du Cane project.
I knew the Flying Fish before yesterday evening only for a few photos. I have seen the beautiful video of CTC of 1966 and sincerely it has seemed to me that the boat "fished" very much without never remaining to touch lightly water with the only rear part (like the two Levi's hulls of Shead and Gardner or the little Souter of Wynne).
You was there and surely you know better of me like that boat was a good design. I know who was Peter Du Cane,a milestone in the design in the sixties in Europe togheter Sonny Levi.
However in Usa those years Aronow just started to create that "evolution of the species" that came to realize the "plastic" but succesful hull of the Cigarettes that united to the surely better (in comparison with the old straight drives units) stern drives units, dominated the offshore scenes up to the arrival of the new hulls of Shead in the middle of the seventies derived as you say really from that Flying Fish.
