Am midway through uploading the 3000 pics of RB08 to the server too.
I think we need to start considering a bigger server.

There's also some early racing from Miami, and the Venice-Triest-Venice of 1977, but am having a bit of trouble capturing the Miami race at the mo. will post later.
Excellent copy of the Greatest Powerboat Race in the World!
Thanks to Mike and again to you Jon that you always furnish material to enjoy us - fans of the classic offshore-in the Greatest Powerboat Website in the World!
I'm waiting with impatience the videos of the firsts Miami races and the first edition of the race Venice to Trieste and back 1977!

Venice Race

Thanks for putting that on the site Jon,and to Mike for the use of it.Have not seen that one.We await the Miami stuff in anticipation of some rare footage, and hope it not too much of a problem transferring it.I know when I first got hold of a Benihana GP 1980 tape from Needlenose on NTSC format,it was a right game transferring it.Not the technogly then I suppose.

Class III Videos

Hi Jon, I wonder if you can help me.

My father raced Class III in 1970,71 and 72 in boats called Easy A, Amber Gambler and Spinebender respectively.

I have found this site and its members very helpful in locating info from his time racing and even managed to find a small clip of Spinebender in the 1972 video you uploaded.

I have also downloaded the 70 and 71 vids but when viewing them, they appear to be the same video, just 1970.

As 71 was his most prolific year, I was hoping to find some footage of 1971.

Do you have that video somewhere?

Much appreciated

Nick

Easy A

For your reference Nick,Easy A is not on the 1971 film.I`d be surprised if you ever found the boat on film, being as these Boatmad films I shot, and was never aware of anybody else at the time creating a historical record of CIII racing. It was only when Ted Toleman contracted out Videovision to film his boys did it ever hit the screens and that was in the early 80`s,until Offshore 2000 came on the scene with Charles Burnett as the driving force. As Tommy Sopwith once said back in the early 70`s, you`ll never get true offshore racing covered on the TV because of the sheer logistics and money required to do it,short of going round in small circles a la P1/WPPA where youv`e got a chance to cover it without huge budgets relatively, and that`s why we should be so grateful that the RB08 or CTC 08 films were made.

The voice of reason, thanks for that Flying Fish. Unfortunately those who have been bitching, moaning and stupidly sowing ill informed seeds of discontent behind the scenes about the so called “fortune” made by the BPRC (that’s a laugh in itself and I KNOW) at the recent powerboat Ball haven’t the slightest conception of how much it costs to (a) put on a powerboat race of the type of the Cowes Powerboat Festival and (b) of the cost of hiring a helicopter, pilot and cameraman for four hours so that a record can be made for those who take part and for those who are interested in the future. You only have to see the interest in the old films now to know that interest will always continue.

IMHO it just has to be done.

There are 4 pages of historic stuff, you can click on this link that will take you to the first page. (further pages clickable at the bottom of each page) some icons are a single video, some link to a whole album of a particular genre.

http://media.boatmad.com/main.php?g2_itemId=718

The path to the gallery section changed recently, so if you're using a link posted more than a month or two ago, it won't work.

SM racer

Nice to see the SM racer had almost forgotten about it. Roger Fletcher very nearly bought it once Shockwave had died but got the Teckno instead.

Shockwave

It just fell apart after every race, we would spend about a week welding up cracks and replacing rivets. It got to the point that the bilge pumps had to run all the time just to keep up with it! The transom was 13mm alloy and that would split all over the place along with the engine beds fuel tanks etc etc the list just got to long in the end!

Goldrush was the same.
I remember Jim saying that they had to replace rivets after each race!

When I saw Shockwave in '96 I noticed that you had cut the strakes open at the bow. I guess that was made to improve the ventilation of the step?. Was there a noteable difference in top speed?

Shockwave

Dont think we cut anything it was proberly more splits!!

We did make the one big step into two smaller ones but by that time it was starting to bend so any improvment we made was wiped out by the hook. Once we put air tubes in to the steps but it made no differance. Upping the engines from 630hp to 970hp only made about 20mph as they were so much lighter we moved the center of gravity so it had a larger wetted area!

You are right that was tried but nothing happend. The best one was polishing the hull that added a bit and like that we once did 103mph. We were about to start adding alot of weight on to the back and trial it but it then died!
