Tis just how I see it, it's only the depth that varies.

Still very keen to get a boat together for the marathon racing/rb2012 as hoped for by many.
Had a look at the provisional class guidelines and was trying to get some more ideas !!!
If anyone has any ideas I would be very pleased to hear them.

You won't go wrong speaking to the competitors in the '08 race.
JF would be a good guy to talk to in the first instance.
Please don't take advice from wanabees - they will cost you money and time.

The provisional rules showed a 10 litre maximum capacity for petrol engines in M4, so a pair of 5 litre V8's would indeed have been the max, however, M4 & 5 are now production based engines only, so the capacity limit for petrol in M4 has now been raised to 12.5 litres, so a pair of Merc 6.2 litre small blocks are the kind of petrol engines expected for that class.
Assuming Gary Manchester allows our rules to be used, the 12.5 litres should stay.
I think a 30 footer, with big (5.8 litre) traditional technology Yanmar through a speedmaster in M5 would be a very reliable, economical boat that could cut it well against all the fragile quick stuff.
At some point we'll be blessed with some proper rough water (absent so far this year in the racing) and the boats intended & built for endurance will shine, mark my words.

Information Meeting.
The intention is to hold a meeting sometime near the end of January to gather all the folk together who intend taking part in the endurance racing, and those interested, for a session of Q & A's, information on race plans so far, etc, etc.
As this is Marathon racing, we need to set the class aside from the regular offshore stuff, and one possible proposal, is that all races will cover a minimum of 100 NM.

Jon,
As you say if I were 40 years younger and had still got a "proper" offshore boat then assuming there was sufficient room in the boat for the zimmer, oxygen and attendant nurse, I may have given it a go.

Jon,
would that be the aggregate of the legs? Or you may be discounting say London Calais, Channel Island runs etc. Those aren't exactly sprints or round the cans racing.

They are sprints round the cans compared to Marathon, that's the whole point.
In the old days, a 1.3 boat (ie, Phantom 16, 85 Yam) would be expected to do around 55-65 NM, 2 litre would be expected to do circa 75-85 NM, and 4 litre, circa 100NM.
So, we need to distinguish those shorter style 'lapped' races, from 'Marathon', or Endurance, or whatever you want to call this 'long range' (that's what Fabio wanted to call it) style of racing.
It's possible that Poole-Cherbourg, could become Poole-Cherbourg-Poole in order to achieve this. If it does, the elapsed time from Poole to Cherbourg will still be measured for the existing record, but with boats turning a couple of marks after the P-C stopwatch has been tripped, and heading straight back to Poole. that would make it circa 140 statute miles (or 122 NM)
Anyone only interested in setting the record from Poole to Cherbourg could stop for fuel in Frog once they've recorded their cross channel time before returning, but it would obviously mess up their chances for victory in the race element of the event.

Totally agree with the principle Jon and there would also have to be an ideal maximum run so that boats can be built to cope with maximum fuel demands.
The only point I was making is not to shoot oneself in the foot with say a future RB race due to logistics needing say a short run of 95m between ports followed by a 180m run the next or even same day purely because of who can or will accomodate the fleet.

For a race like Round Britain, where you're covering 1500 miles in a week, it would be irrelavent and the race would always be structured to fit round the possibilities and limitations that the Island / coast has. It would be a part of the Marathon class constitution that 'wherever possible', races would exceed 100 miles.
I think the longest leg of RB was 241 statute miles, and agree that a cap at say 250 statute miles for any one leg would be sensible.

You don't, at least not in France.
You don't.
It's a Powerboat race, not a booze cruise.
You'll have to plan a trip on the tunnel to 'eastenders' like you normally do.

So down to the important aspects of racing logistics then.
Sod the race, what about the booty
