They're off again - the tracking system seems to be jumping about a bit but it looks like Cinzano and the Buzzi have taken off leaving the others behind a bit - on the way to Bangor!

Latest on the Tracker
Looks like Kilcullen Galway Flyer has problems and gone for cover.
They're travelling at 5 knotts.
Cinzano is now leading, travelling at around 30 knotts.
Must be a bit bumpy out there.

Marathan/Rules/UIM
Interesting thread with all the talk of rules etc. Not sure why the UIM is brought into the argument cos they actually had nothing to do with the rules just rubber stamping the Brit/RYA proposal without change (except cats under organisers discretion).
What we have is what the UK wanted.
From the outside I can see the need for clear rules looking at "production type boats" but from both sides of the pond.
But it is still important to allow Mr big and wealthy to run what they brung - whether it be a Buzzi, an American or a Victory type. The big money and names brings sponsors and networks missing from powerboat racing. Maybe one of these would win overall but so what - owners organisers of the tv program need to direct how they want to present the race.
Looking at the Ireland entry something is not right, I would suggest something more manageable and media friendly maybe Liverpool/IOM/Dublin and return. Just an opinion that some plans are to big for teams to enter regularly.
Otherwise if you want more even racing try X cat different boats lengths weight, manufacturers but one engine package, or 2 litre or V24 all have competitive racing.
Marathon is what it is endurance - keep the production standard, but let an open run what you brung in.

Thats not strictly true, you see the set of rules put to the UIM, were not quite the set of rules that left the RYA Technical Working Group.
The addition of cats wasn't wanted either, but the UK man on site at the meeting didn't fight our corner when the simple question 'why not allow cats?' was asked, even though much discussion had taken place before and the UK 'man' knew full well cats were not part of the UK Marathon plan.
Don't agree with the run what ya brung principle. OK for outright records, etc, but an ongoing series needs a set of rules throughout the classes, so year on year titles mean something. Run what ya brung is just a cash pissing contest. Also, from the outset, all the usual boring speak about pleasing sponsors, and networks was kept out of Marathon, coz we know they don't exist. Marathon was about the competitor entering a sport with rules and courses he/she likes, paying for it and not attempting to please a non existant mythical cash cow with compromised rules/courses.

Marathan/Rules/UIM
Not sure where they got changed but they were the rules presented to the UIM as a UK proposal and unchanged at the UIM Cominoff meetings. Sponsors or financial supporters are only going to come from within the sport as we are not commercially viable at present just cos someone may spend a small fortune to win so what at least you have them in powerboat racing not paris dakar or whatever. or steam car projects etc. The sport cannot sustain a future on entry money alone.
I think the marathan concept does have a place and should not be dumbed down with short courses but maybe round Ireland and other options this year is to much hence the entry again to raise interest PR TV etc something more manageable like Liverpool Dublin Glasgow would rattle media interest.

Yes, I know. but the fact remains, they differ from what left TWG. also, besides Cats, there seems to have been a load of small additions, such as race number prefix's etc that were not there before. The RYA has moved many other goalposts for Marathon, with Measurement certs, licence changes etc. What seemed to be a very popular concept at the outset, due in part to it's simplicity, that appeared to be drawing folk out from previous retirement, is already looking to be flagging, due I think to the red tape and added cost that as ever, accompanies the RYA and swallows up everyones energy and interest.
