Two or more pumps can be used very successfully provided a few simple rules are followed:
1. All pumps must be fed from a common reservoir.
2. If the pumps have integral reservoirs these should be removed and a hose fitted between the common reservoir and the pump.
3. Check valves to be fitted on the pressure side of each pump.
Then you will have a system that will operate with one engine or as many engines as you have in a multi installation and there will be no fighting between any of the pumps whether they are running or not.

Well we got it running in time to get to Torquay for Sunday lunchtime despite a couple of major time wasters. It turned out that Mr Yanmar Friday afternoon bloke had put two wires on the ignition barrel the wrong way round resulting in much head scratching to find that one! What are the pressure and flow volume of these two pumps? Also, what is the oil reservoir capacity and volume level?

They are standard Yanmar pumps for the BY260 - I don't have that information I'm afraid. We may be simplifying the whole system down to one pump with the other pump in a loop with a cooler if this plan doesn't work - we'll see!

Check the flow rates and the reservoir capacity. Note the turn over ratio. Example: Two pumps, 4 gpm flow, oil reservoir with 1 gallon capacity. The fluid turn over is eight times per minute so the reservoir has to be able to fully fill and deplete itself eight times per minute.

You will need a vent on the reservoir that can enable this to happen and at the same time try to de-air the fluid before it goes back to the pumps again which is every 7.5 seconds.

A balance point of "oil reservoir" to oil volume will have to be met so as the incoming oil does not get blown back out the vent when the tank "breathes" and thus puke to your bilge. To much volume in the tank will force the oil to puke out of the reservoir vent, to little and the system will starve and the steering will become aireated.

Thanks for that - we have now simplified the system temporarily so that we can test the boat and it's working with one pump, the helm and a bit of plumbing on the transom.

How do you stop water flow going back into the engine with the high exhaust outlets?
And will you be ready for the Poole race?

At the moment port engine has a loop, and stbd you have to turn off the raw water and let the exhaust clear before stopping it. We are moulding the rear platform (bustle apparently) at the moment and then there will be drained loops both sides.
Yes provided we have no major issues tomorrow and measuring goes ok.
