Not wishing to alienate "All" owners of Phantom Boats, some of you guys are fantastic and own stunning boats, but, if you think it is easy refitting a boat like mine come down to Drivers on Saturday or Sunday and have a look at her and see the problems we have had. Sourcing parts at a reasonable cost has taken ages, getting things done properly has taken time, saving up for the unexpected (Drives costing circa £15k) has taken time, May and June have cost me nearly £20k in cash try doing that in a recession! that equates to circa 4 of your boats - so stop the crap comments and give it a go yourself - then, and only then you are qualified to have a dig......

Martin, you're the ONLY one that thought, no, 'knew', it was going to be easy.
I'm not sure dishing out a load of boat snobbery shite to a guy with a fully working boat is appropriate, whether it's a boat you respect or not.
It was your choice to take on the project, no one else's, and one assumes you can afford it, or you wouldn't have done so (especially as so many, including me, warned of the costs in time, sanity & money) Fullbore clearly chose a boat he could comfortably afford, maybe he could afford a lot more, maybe he could afford 4 of your boats, who knows. But to knock him for having a boat that fits his budget doesn't seem fair to me.

Its not snobbery or anything of the sort, I have never met the chap or seen his boat - which I am sure is his pride and joy (as it should be). I was just replying to his post. I never said it would be easy rebuilding D2S and yes I have questioned my own sanity at times regarding the project and yes you and others said that I must be mad taking it on - So on a scale of 1-10 im 11 on the insanity scale but we will be having fun in the "Mad House"

Friendly banter is one thing but to call someone you don't know a w!!ker for taking longer to finish a project than originally planned is a bit off,I am sure there are loads of us that have undertaken projects that have taken alot longer to complete I bought a house and said to my better half that we would have it finished in three months four and a half years later still not finished !
Two weeks ago I was on the m27 and took a detour to Drivers for the first time what a great place .Spoke to Budweiser working on D2S great to see it again memories of the 80's came flooding back .Can't wait to see it on the water so good on you Martin for undertaking this project.

I'm with Martin on this one and think everyone should lay off him. I can't see what fullbore wrote, but if it was as offensive as it seems, he's well out of line.
Granted, Martin may not have accepted how much time and effort was involved at first, but how many of us have leapt into a project against people's advice and ended up suprised at how hard it's been?
There's plenty of people out there who are happy to stick to what they know and can comfortably afford, but thank god for the people who wonder 'what if' every day, where would we be without them? Nothing would ever get invented, that's for sure! I don't see anyone slagging off the people who organise events like round britain and are amazed by the amount of time, money and effort it involved than expected!
Just because people told Martin that it would take a lot to do doesn't mean he should just give up and not try it. My cat took a phenominal amount of time and money that i didn't have to finish, and plenty of people told me it would, but some people just have to learn from getting burnt, not just taking other's word for it.
I've never heard or seen Martin moaning or complaining about how long the project is taking or how much it is costing. I'm sure he could've afforded it much more before this 'credit crunch' stuff, but he's carried on regardless, even selling one of his vehicles and borrowing money, whereas many other people would've used it as an excuse to just give up. I for one can relate to this determination to carry on and finish what i started, even if it is a complete waste of time.
If you've never done something like this build before then who are you to slag Martin off for what he's doing? If you have done something like this before then you should know better.
My point is, it's not like Martin's moaning about how long it's taking, or how much it's costing, so why are people slagging him off? Maybe if a few of those people offered a bit of help in the spirit of helping a like minded friend restore an old class A boat instead of sitting at home criticising the it would get done a whole lot faster.
Jon - You seemed like a really nice Guy when i met you at drivers, and i was proud to have met both an ex racer who i doubtless watched in Guernsey when i was younger and the owner of this extremely good forum. I have to say though that i am suprised at your endless digs at Martin for this project, I don't see what he's actually done to deserve it? Yeah, maybe a bit of friendly 'ha ha, told you it'd be this hard', but there's no need at all (that i am aware of) to be downright nasty about the whole thing. As far as the whole beating a boat in a lower class thing, sometime's it's not just about what class you're boat is in, it can be about friendly racing between mates too. No one over here would moan about me trying to beat their phantoms in my cat, it's just racing between mates with all classes put aside. I'd never live it down if i didn't win though!
How about we all just give Martin a break yeah, even lend a hand if you can? I know I'd be there every weekend if it wasn't for me living over here!
James

My fake outward persona on first meeting can be quite convincing, but most suss me out quicker than you've done.

To be honest, yes, as far as the money goes, I'm joking. but it's also true that if I were interested in helping, I would want paying, a lot. so only half joking I spose.

Couldn't agree more, life's about more than doing a job for payment. If i never did anyone the odd favour i wouldn't have a business. The way i look at it, if I've got something that can contribute to a project and the time to make that contribution, then i will, usually for free. Generally speaking people return the favour one way or another!

There’s the difference, I did ask Jon to give me a quote at the outset of this project for rigging the boat - He refused.... which in hindsight I’m glad he did
You never know what he would have done to stop us competing in the CTC
Im Not joking!

So, purely out of interest, (as i said i have nothing at all against you), why won't you help Martin, and why do you hate the project so much?

Working with/for Martin isn't something I'd want to do. We've been over it before, do a search.
I don't hate the project, the truth is, I couldn't care less either way about 'the project'.

Well then, my mum taught me something once...
If you haven't got a grievance, and you can't think of anything nice to say, then don't say anything at all.
