Round Britain 1984 Diary

Bit by bit, more and more pieces of info on the RB 1984 race are coming out. I recently met up with a guy who I haven't seen for some fifteen years. Paul Rutherford navigated for Jeff Hunton and Philip Warner throughout the '80's and of course navigated for them in "Puffa" a 28ft Hunton that came 7th overall in the 1984 RB. He has let me take photos of his written and pictorial diary of that event which no one else has seen before. I have asked the RB08 webmaster to upload them onto our site which hopefully he will do over the weekend. The diary makes for fascinating reading and will be an eye opener for those hoping to take part in the RB08 event. Pics are amusing, all those dark haired young guy's are now silver haired old guy's!

Before I start a storm in a tea cup Tim I will just check that out with Rob Beakhust, he's our chief scruitineer so he should know. Maybe I'm wrong, it's been known to happen.

Less of the "old", we just don't go there! With regard to the above discussion the answer is in PB1 rule E16. You gotta have a bulkhead i'm afraid.

Sorry to do this to you Mike, BUT this Ffing bulkhead...............is that between tank and crew or between engines and tanks?
Very important, as not one american designed or shead diesign has a BH between engines and tanks.. So anyone running a Cigarette is out, plus to put in a BH between tank and engine will mean a 50% reduction in tank size and this will throw out all weight distribution and no one will be able to do the 250 mile tankage for Milford to Bangor as an example.
'cos all boats must carry a 15% min of fuel extra.
Remember a lot are going to get lost even with GPS or if we get a NE or big SWester going up to Bangor you have to run with it or go for cover..
While on fuel can we carry neopreme tanks to carry the excess and must they have foam filling or not.................
Not that I am trying t stir it up just I know you have nothing better to do this w/e

The answer to that Tim is as I understand it between tank and engine. You really need to talk to Rob as he has the rule book not me. I am sure that with ingenuity most competitors will solve the problem. Weekend, what weekend, when did I last see one of those then?

I can understand having a bulkhead between fuel and engine. Typically the placement of the crew is irrelevant to the bulkhead - just the position of the fuel and the engines with relation to the bulkhead is relevant.

Many English built boats have the fuel in the same area as the crew, with a bulkhead between crew/fuel and engines.

Sunseeker and Icemarine both are (crew&fuel) bulkhead (engine) configurations.

well Cigarette/cougar/scarab/wellcraft/CUV have stagered engines with fuel tanks opposite and this is an integral part of the design set up and trim!!
How can we get round it without loosing trim and fuel capasity.
On the Cig (example) engines staggered and tanks staggered, then in front of cockpit 2 tanks one either side total 1250 litres.....

Annie Beakhust (Race Control) negotiated a great deal for us with the RYA on the licence situation which she will post shortly.

Not taking her thunder but you will need TWO International Licence holders on each boat at all times. Only £250 per RB08 Int Licence!! As all existing racers know that is a very good deal and we have to thank the RYA for that. I will ask Annie to post on our web site FULL details on how you get that licence and other RB08 (Basic and Day) licence's within the next seven days.

So out of intrest how much is your calender fee from the rya? And why if we only race one international, your fee is less than 1/2 price to what we have to pay? Me thinks this needs looking into. Why are they giving you things that they wont give the guys who currently race?
Ah i know,dodgey handshakes

Rubbish, get real. So Annie is into dodgy handshakes is she? I don't think so somehow. It's basic maths, it's not six licences for six boats for one race it's 150 for 75 boats! Don't you always get a discount if you buy in quantity?

Point taken Mike. So how much is your calender fee gonna be? Working on the RYA risk factor system should be about £100k, seeing as it costs clubs currently £1800 to run a round the cans race with 15 boats.
