Cowes 2011 update

Sorry to see that the traditional start will not be re enacted - also that it is a long slog to Hurst! As a safety boat that has completed sweeps around the island - twice in one day because nobody else was prepared to do it, regularly been placed in Poole / Christchurch Bay all for "love", it was with interest to be told that we, plus several other safety ribs were not required this year for the Cowes/Poole/Cowes Race as it was completely catered for in this context. May I wish safe and exciting racing to all.

I am suprised at this news !
It is true that, with the course now reverting to the same start as was used from 2008/10, the need for so many safety boats in The Solent disappeared, but your experience & duty last year was greatly appreciated.

Guys,

The Start may of moved but we still need as many Safety Boats as we can get. We have got to keep the Muster area, North Head and the Needles Channel clear for the Start. All the Race Boats have got to get to North Head and back so we will need boats to shadow them back. We never turn any help down.

So Guys will my annual slog along Hurst shingle to the castle with camera, pack lunch, couple of tinnys, And number one son( who has"nt stopped talking about last year yet!) Be the same as the last two years? ie running as a pack down to the north head bouy under the start boat, Then the start proper at north head and off to Torquay and back with the finish line just of cowes? Hope so! cos last year was special! And Please can someone post the entries up to date. Thanks

I think I need to address the Cowes Start Issue.

Running the 2011 Cowes event this year was never going to be easy after the success of 2010.

After agreeing to organise the 2011 event in mid-December last year, I wanted to put on a similar event to last year, but with the races starting from Cowes.

With the same Organising team as last year, we put into place our proposed “traditional Cowes Start” in January, and in early February presented our proposals to the Cowes Harbour Master.

Working with the advice from the Cowes Harbour Master and reporting back to the RYA, we were advised by both the CHM and the RYA that we would need 20 boats (10 either side) to mark the Start Chute.

I was further advised by the RYA that a further 15 Safety Boats would need to be on station all the way up to the Western Solent.

After sending out some 400 emails and going viral, incredibly we managed to raise the number of safety boats required (I thank all of you for your support).

Just over a month ago the Cowes 2011 Officer of the Day and Safety Officer felt that with the number of Safety Boats signed up, we could submit our Race to the RYA in the knowledge that this wasn’t a “punt”, but a well considered decision over 5 months by the most experienced Officials.

Sadly, the RYA turned down our request.

Please come to the Cowes Yacht Haven on the 26th and 27th to see the Race Boats, we have got some fantastic entries again this year.

We are as disappointed as you for not seeing those boats race from Cowes and back.

Thankyou so much for trying John... and thanks to your excellent team for all the effort that they put-in too. Would have been fantastic.

It's a worthy aim and always worth a try in the future.. there may come a time!

In the meantime, as John says, let's enjoy seeing the boats (and a big thankyou to them for turning-up!) and make the most of it!!

Martin Lai in the Pantera? Don't think he'll make it there and back if I was a betting man (which I'm not!) Markus would be my bet, Vee if it's flat if he doesn't break it again! The new Cougar R12 Viper now has some graphics up on the Cowes website - looks good but it will be fantastic if it wins first time out - I think someone filled the form out incorrectly though - total CC 8400 and total HP 725, my guess is that it's double that which would be 16.8 litres and 1450 hp petrols. they will also have to go through the same process as me to get a measurement certificate which could take them well into September!

Its a real shame about the start not being from Cowes like it should be but lets look on the positive side... at least there is a C.T.C this year.

John any news on the C.P.C entrants for this year.

And just an added thought... If they can't start the C.T.C from Cowes where is RB12 starting from??? If its not Portsmouth like in 08 and they are starting further down the coast, what happens when they get all the way back round???

Do they go around the I.O.W to avoid the solent?????

I can tell you the RB12 event is starting at the Olympic venue in Weymouth - all of the course details are on www.RB12.com and they are of course supporting Cowes for the second year running.

John I want to thank you and the team for all of your efforts. Sad news about the lack of a true Cowes start, but at least there's a race. Let's face it with the world economy in tatters who knows what the future holds!
