Perhaps certain people just take things for granted.

I have to say that I think the penalties were rather harsh, especially as some people got off scot free!

Knowing how many people read, post and enjoy Powerboat Racing on this Forum.

This is a link to the 2011 British Powerboat Festival Poster.

Would be great to see this poster posted in shops, offices, clubs etc. over the next month or so.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Cowes Torquay Cowes Start 2011

Many of you have wanted to see the Cowes Torquay Cowes start from Cowes, as opposed to how the race has been started for the last 3 years.

This year we have permission to run, "the traditional start", but your help will be needed.

Safety Boats are required to patrol the start chute!

Please PM or email me if you can help.

Since my last post, 350 emails have been sent out & we have received 3 replies (not including the kind offer from COPOC).

To run this start - We need help.

If not, we will go similar to '08, '09 & '10.

Up to you.

yes it is,after the very warm welcome we didnt recieve last year followed by a half hearted threat from a rib safety boat, for not flying our "safety marshall" flag, because it was tied to my stern nav pole before it went for a swim. maybe said rib boat didnt like the fact that i had pointed out that himself and the 3 other boats at the marker were to the east of it and not the west, and were right on the course for when the boats were turning the mark. needless to say i didnt hear anymore from it. so this year i will be spectator, and do everything i would normally, but without any hassle,or added expence.

I will be with COPOC so what ever they ask to help out i am willing to do
I am struggling to understand what the problems with a Cowes start are.
I know there are complexitys with H&E etc but i think a lot of the time we are kept in the dark as to what the problems are ,i think if we had more imfo therefore a better understanding it might help people to come forward to assist.
Cowes benefits hugely financially each year from all this activity in my opinion
the Authourities should bend over backwards to assist not obstruct, not that i am saying they dont, its just rumour.
Maybe we should all move to Lymington i am sure they would like the revenue, maybe not who knows,it just seems a bit daft calling something the Cowes.Torquay if it doesnt start at Cowes.
Not starting at cowes removes the event from a lot of spectators i feel and is not in the original spirit of the event.
I have got to an age where any changes or modernisation seems just crap
so maybe without knowing the facts i had better bugger off and have another drink
looking forward to seeing everyone there never the less.
Suppose i had better get the new turbo on.now wheres those new props i had made 2 yrs ago.

During the time that I ran Cowes the problems were with the Harbour Masters both Cowes and Southampton. As long as the race started out of their territorial waters then that was fine otherwise forget it, far too dangerous!! So frustrating as I wanted to recreate the old start and if Ciao can do that then good luck to him. Usually the RYA want a zillion safety boats just to stop the Yachties crossing in front of the racing fleet - as they do!

As for the Councils, I never saw hide nor hair of any of them - ever. Hopefully it might just possibly be different with the 2013 Cowes to Monte-Carlo Race but I'm not going to hold my breath!

Thanks Mike that confirms the rumours and is what i suspected.
I was safety boat at the channell used by the fast cats to IOW in 2008
and witnessed comercial vessels stop making way for the start of the Round Britain.I didnt find this surprising thinking its to be expected its what we do
here in jolly old england. So the run from Portsmouth to the needles is further than Cowes and that went off ok .
As far as Yachties are concerened i made the mistake of trying to go round the island one wk end so as a friend could document the coastline photographicly. It was the end of Cowes week i gave up due to the amount of near miss situations.I shouldnt of been there at that time so surely they could keep out of the way for a couple of hours one day a year
As you say if CIAO and his crew can pull it off this year it would be great.
With the ever increasing costs of fuel etc i know its difficult for people to commit to helping out in the safety boat area but if it could happen this year it would be a good lever for any future negotiations,So come on you lot get your names down

i'll be able to kick back and enjoy it this year, for the first time in years i'm not doing any RYA sailing stuff at portland, GEE should be in france and i'm banned from racing, it couldn't have worked out any better, unless we have our new boat by then, that would be the icing on the cake, so i'm with you Carl

We have had the okay from both Cowes HM @ ABP Southampton subject to us providing at least 20 safety boats patroling the start chute and the risk assessments being approved.

RYA Course approvals will also have to agree the start plan.

We have got this far due to the hard work of Rob Andrews OOD for the event.

John has stated that due to Rob Andrews hard work, we have a chance of re-creating the start actually from Cowes this year.
The reasons we have not been able to do this since before 2008 are many, and concern previous accidents & incidents. We all know that we live in a time when H & S has to be rigorously observed, and the RYA have to ensure that the risks are as managable as possible.
It is understood that all of us are on hard times now, but those who have a suitable craft and love the sport and this race, should consider if they can be of help.
Officious attitudes in the past can be off-putting, thats understood; but unless the 20+ boats are obtained, we revert to a start from Hurst area. It really is down to that.
To the person who said "...how can you call it the Cowes-Torquay-Cowes if it doesn't start at Cowes ?" I say: Have a heart - think of the history. The race is based at Cowes afterall.
The old American Miami-Nassau & Miami-Key West Races were based in Miami, but started some way from there, off shore.
We still get a better view.
In closing I say this: Rob Andrews and Race Secretary Sally Windsor have spent enormous amounts of their own time on this so far - please don't let that be wasted. Support the plea for safety boats, PLEASE!
