Nice Idea if you can keep the ferries, the Red Jet water Taxi , and the Yachties ( coincides with Torbay Regatta) out of the way for a couple of hours.

A timekeepers nightmare. ...and, I'm not sure who your 'stopover' is for / to please.

If Torquay wanted to pay (handsomly), maybe, for charity........why on earth would we want to stop?

Its called giving spectators something to see. I spent 25 years going to Cowes as a spectator always wishing i could race and i'm now making up the numbers.

Doesn't sound to difficult to time a boat in and time him out again. Could take a picture as it crosses a line and again as it leaves to confirm things.

Still i'm not organising the event so not down to me.

I will say this though 2012 will be my last serious race and then i would like to give back my time to the sport in any capacity. ( even a timekeeper )

MMnn, we've spent 20 years reducing the competitor field, by making it a more spectator and sponsor friendly sport. Really been quite an amazing success story, in depleting the field that is.

I think that as we've found a formula (races designed for racers, and no one else, all be it, and old fasioned one) that seems to work, lets let it grow a bit organicaly and stableize, before we do the usual UK powerboat racing thing and change it all, then ask everyone why it's failed.

We've had a great & successful RB, and one CTC and already, we're getting inundated with suggestions & requests on how to improve it, add classes, change rules etc.

I'm certainly not trying to meddle with you guys doing a great job. Only a suggestion on a public forum.

Never know the odd idea may be worth thinking about. After all the entry fees were amended through comments made. ( not saying it was good for the organisers but certainly was for the less rich who love bigger boats )

Not trying to pour cold water on things but. RB8 was such an incredible race to compete in but It wasn't just a race it was an adventure and a physical /mental challenger for many that took part which may of been why some took part. Sure lets build on the back of it but we shouldn't get carried away with whats happening within the sport. After all for many there is a couple of tough years ahead.

The state of racing at the moment is dire to say the least. low numbers through out every class. It has got to the point where numbers are so low that even racers feel that with no one to race against, what is the point, from that point on it will just spiral. the usual suspects will always be blamed, ie fuel, entry fees officials etc.
But one race i would love to see again is the Putney - Calais, open to all classes. That way anyone with a boat can enter.

Happy boating.

For sure!

Fingers crossed that the adventure of cross channel challenges and classic, no nonsense, long races keeps the fire alight.

The RYA have produced some very good work with event insurance, which will help keep the costs down, and the International Marathon licence agreed price is too, a very welcome saving. With this help, we have every possible chance of keeping the interest hot for Marathon through these challenging times.

It would be nice to see them all actually run past the harbour at Torquay and possibly make an allowance for Apache to stop for their Chicken and Mushroom pies again !

I'm sure that if that's possible, it will happen.

Good Post!

You must tell me where your local pub is.

As for Putney-Calais that was a long time ago, however I spoke to the old chaps that did that initial run this afternoon.

PM me if you want to support them for their attempt at it this year.

The "Old Men" will be doing it in a Sunseeker, average age 80.

Reading back over this thread, it dawned on me that there's summat odd about those pics of the abandoned Cig.

Can anyone answer why it has had the transom repaired, ie, no holes where the drives would normally live? Was it being re-rigged, or splashed?

Rubrail is also missing, mmmmmmnn.

Joe, if you know the names of the boats in question, it would be worth doing a search in the gallery section (this is a different part of boatmad, so you need to use the search engine within the gallery itself to get results)

Use the search box top left of this page: http://media.boatmad.com/gallery/main.php

We aren't going to do that. All boats will be running into Torquay passing the Ore Stone Rock on their starboard side and heading for Paignton Pier where they will turn on a 9ft Yellow Pillar bouy and head for Torquay Marina where there will be a another 9' Yellow pillar buoy where you will turn again and head for the Ore Stone passing it on your starboard side as you head for home 85 miles away. Final details complete with Lat & Long of race marks will be in racing instructions shortly to be published on the BPRC web site.

Those wishing to compete in this, one of the greatest offshore powerboat races in the world, please get your Entry Form filled in from the BPRC web site and sent to us soonest. We now need to know numbers.

Powerboat Ball over and done with, Cowes coming down the line and boy have we got a weekend for you if you are competing!
!
ML.
