It was a light, "Levi" style boat, run straight, run flat, fly flat, come home 1st.

- narrow, long 46' epoxy Skater Cigarette, 24Ί, 2 shallow steps, stretched to 15m.
- full bow, with buzzi anti-stuff planes, standup sides and full transom, with the whole keel being a single fuel tank
- BananaShark Ύ cockpit over Shockwave ICE 1 seating/consoles
- pair of IFM 1308, 14.3L mechanical engines, laid nose-to-nose
- Pat Weismann OD marine gear & crashboxes
- Flexitab 1100S bustle & shafts; long single rudder and all running gear cut out of maranging steel, m300 & 460
- analog pyrometers and boost gauges and dual path, fault-tolerant hydraulics
- a couple of 'off-grid' internal battery chart plotters
- cigar lighter

It was to be a single purpose boat, with no feature especially striking, but it took a lot of thought and design to make it so damn basic.

BTW, Petter, I sure like your 17m rib. Have you any customers for it, yet?

Sounds like a good workable concept.

No takers on the big RIB yet after the original costumer redrew from the project, but then again the marked for a 49.9’ race rib is rather small
It did generate loads of interest and other new projects have come on the back of it so I am relatively happy. Would be nice to see one built though, spent loads of time on getting the aerodynamics right.

A group email has just been sent out regarding the London start for 2014. While the email contains all the details, the main takeouts are:

- the start will now be from the Greenwich Meridian in front of the Old Naval College in Greenwich

- the fleet will cross the start at 45-50 knots

- the fleet will continue to Southend at this speed

- the ONLY times the speed will reduce will be:
(a) going through the Thames Barrier
(b) in the event of an unexpected danger appearing on the river (significant steps will be taken to minimise this possibility)

We're delighted to be able to announce that Monaco has now officially confirmed that we can finish the race there next year. Further details have just been emailed out to all teams.

Teams should've received two emails over the past 24 hours regarding our Event Briefing which will take place at noon this Saturday at the Pavilion in the Royal Yacht Squadron - our thanks to the BPRC for hosting us.

The briefing should take approx 1 hour.

We require the names of all those intending to attend in advance so please reply to the email, PM me here on Boatmad, or send an email to hello@ventureoffshorecup.com

I would prefer shorter legs to be honest.

The problem is that most people can't afford more than 2 weeks off work for something like this and the overall distance involved - the organisers have to split it up one way or another. The teams will be able to refuel wherever they want so there won't be a requirement to carry unmanageable amounts of fuel on board.

Reading between the lines the venues would get more out of the event with the boats stopping for two days giving them more value.

There will always be weather to deal with and if a leg is cancelled it will be a longer trip by road and it will miss a big part of the race to cancel one leg.

I have to admit that although it looks like fantastically tough and exiting challenge, a couple of the legs are really going to offer some problems. Given a starting time at 0900, the majority of the boats on the leg from Puerto Banus to Barcelona, for instance, probably won't make it to Barca before sunset (around 9 PM). The seas in the Med can really be a challenge, and averaging 40+ knots over this distance with fuel stops etc will be interesting. Don't get me wrong - it looks like a true test of man & machine, but I for one am very glad I am not responsible for the fleet.

And don't get me started on covering more than 400 nms in the Bay of Biscay on one day. Bring your chiropractors, everyone!

I asked the question about starting times on the longer legs and the fleet will be starting very early indeed!

I was told that all crews will need to file a "flight plan" that will be kept secret so that if you are seen on the tracker to be going into a port it won't be assumed you are retiring or need assistance.

They will be very long days and time will tell as to whether it puts people off or not.

I have just got off the phone to a new entry that has one sponsor and part funded and they expect to have a full commitment by next week so teams are still signing up.

Group email just dispatched with details on entry-list, upcoming entry fees, and great news about the Harmsworth Trophy.

On matters raised above, Cookee's spot-on about the need to get this into a two-week window ....anything longer is too big an ask of teams.

Bear in mind that this is happening in June which has the longest days of the year.

Yes, it's going to be challenging. It already was a massive physical challenge on boats and crews. The 'Prologue' this year showed that it was also a strong navigational challenge, and now this development means that a 'strategy' challenge gets added. We're pleased to say that the overwhelming response from teams has been along the lines of "bring it on".

New rules?

Pages 42-59 suggests some changes to the Marathon Rules.
Who is behind this? Lot of new rules under "canopy/partial canopy".

And what is the definition of a "partial canopy"? Wettpunkt? Cookees boat?
Dorians Fountain?

One good thing is that only the driver and co-driver must have "sea survival certificate".

1200.3.5 "Access at this opening must not be restricted in any way whatsoever" could easily disqualify our boat as you could describe the rear seats as obstruction - That would depend on the measurer or the scrutineer, they are trying to define the whole but only doing half a job, not saying it's easy but the application of common sense and the bleeding obvious SHOULD rule here!

Not sure if 508.3 will be added to the marathon rules as well as Class 3 etc or not but it will require a lot more work to get one of our boats through if it does.

We've just received a call from Chris Clayton to say that the magnificent 'GEE 185' will be racing with us next year in Historic Class (and also the news that he'll be hosting the mother of all parties in Puerto Banus during the race). With living legend Glenn Chidzoy also involved we're confident that the lunacy factor has now been turned up to 11.

Teams - another update has just been emailed out.

Worsforwear - we were due to send someone down but had to cancel as we had important sponsor meetings to attend to. Instead we sent personal letters, brochures and event documentation to all relevant UIM officials (all pre-agreed and pre-arranged)
